If you need assistance in identifying a bug or disease etc. you should check out this site:
http://www.winetitles.com/diagnosis/index.asp

It is for the grape industry but may be of assistance to someone.

Feels good to know that you have beneficial bugs in your system, doesn't it! At least now you know not to destroy it.

Are you human?: Hmm. Let me check.

I took a photo of a very similar fly here on the sunshine coast just last week.
I am pretty sure they are robber flies.

Not sure if they are good or bad as they don't seem fussy what they eat. Basically anything they can catch it seems.

What robber fly.jpg [ 144.94 KiB | Viewed 2698 times ]

This photo was taken on the 2nd November 2008 at the BYAP shop. I saw it on the ground and wondered what on earth it was So, as you do, I took lots of photos and recently saw a picture of a robber fly in a book. Maybe they are around at this time of year, so are many wonderful bugs and I have noticed that it is clearly mating season amongst the bug world. Today there was a pair of flies on the office door, damsel flies in the pond as well as frogs.
Must be spring time. :flower:

Found this gorgeous critter on a basil leaf today, but I frightened him into the Polygala before I could get a decent shot. He is only about 30mm (1 1/2 ") long. I think it is a juvenille because they are usually a little bigger and the colours more intense. Note the green head, orange body and blue tipped tail.
