I found one of my rainbows yesterday with a surprised look on its face, as if to say, "I'm fairly sure I had that tail earlier..."

Thanks for the advice! I will give it until Saturday and if the goldies are still getting grief, I will get a new tank for them. At the moment they are keeping themselves to the top reaches of the tank, with the perch staying to the lower echelons. Saying that the perch seem to be quite aggressive with each other too, so it is not just the goldies which are getting harassed!

Marcus, timely topic - you've got me thinking now, be having nightmares of goldies being torn apart on Friday night :sign12: .. :fish: :fish: .. :tongue8:

I did mention that getting SPs would stimulate my enthusiasm to get the new system up but not this way aaaaah!

I now have the guilts about the goldies, if they are still getting harrassed by the weekend, I will get them their own tank (bucket!). Saying that, the Perch have been literally going for one another, and there have been a couple of "full-on" fights between a couple of the perch. Is this normal, has anyone else experienced this?

Early on when I had my first batch of silvers in the aquarium the biggest one was giving the smaller ones a fair bit of grief. I think I may have accidentally killed that one, it was in my very early days of perch keeping and that batch were mongrel things that came from an aquarium shop as feeder fish. Were never destined for the fry-pan.

I'd forgotten about that. All 20 lived past the end off the poll I think, but in the end only 5 lived and I expect they will be forever dwarfs as a result of gill damage from too much ammonia and other adverse conditions (at the shop and my place). Can't believe I was that bad at the start. To think that in the end I had 30 perch, some more than 15cm long) in the same 200 litre aquarium.

It has now been about 4 days since I introduced the Perch and they have now just started to shoal. Prior to this they 'aggresively' kept themslves to themselves on the bottom of the tank, attacking anything that came near them.

As you can see from this thread, I was concerned that the perch were attacking the goldfish, however now the Goldfish are shoaling with the perch and perch are letting them! Weird!

might have been an adjustment phase, marcus, things tend to get agro when they are vulnerable or uncomfortable.

Marcus, thanks for that, my goldies are having a hell of a time with the SP, was seriously thinking of setting up a temporary fish tank but will wait now.

The SP have staked out the bottom including the pipe hides and the goldies don't like it at all - will monitor for the next couple of days.

Funny tho - throw in some food and they all eat together in harmony

I recommend*NOT* to put SP in with goldies, especially if the SP are much larger, I rescued my comets from the "big" tank today, thought they may have been diseased but on closer inspection had scales ripped off, tails torn apart and generally in a sorry state and not eating att, here's a pic of their new temporary home - put in 2 of those siphons from the "big" tank so water is constantly changing.

I am really going to enjoy fattening these SP up for my plate

I guess there is no hard and fast rule. My commets are about 5cm and my silver perch 20-25cm. They have been living together in harmony for months.
