Hydroton is nice. Because it is:
- kind on the hands when planting
- has a great surface for bacteria
- is used extensively and has been proven out.

However. it is my experience that scoria 20mm works just as well.
As grapes are not an annual, you only plant them once, preferably as you are filling the beds to save your hands.

Install a biofilter (after the GBs) to ensure good bacterial conversion whilst still getting solids in the GB.

make the grape runs out of that plastic stuff for putting drains across driveways. they don't need to be deep because of the biofilter.

grapes love the water so much that continuous flow down hill would work well.

you can get away without using sheep to keep the grass and weeds down by not watering the ground, or concreting the beds in such that a mower can easily go down between the runs without needing to approach the grape trunks.

In fact if 150mm or bigger pipe were used, with holes cut every 3 metres, then no weeds would grow in the AP either as there is no light to support them.

I don't know, I'm just musing. I expect it should still be an expensive setup.
