I have been having a small snail problem so I approached the gardening sage (my mother) for advice and was told that beer is a way kill them off and this would not affect my fish. I have placed down small dishes but the only problem was that on inspecting the fridge the only beer that I was willing to donate was a XXXX gold that my father in law left from his last visit, and my concern is that no self respecting snail will drink it..........lol

Thankfully... like many Queenslanders... snail don't have such a discerning pallete as to be able to distinguish good beer from crud...

Just be aware, boys . . . . that is is no such thing as a bad beer . . . . it's just that some are better than others!
But then again, there is that Swan stuff and that Dr Tooheys cough medicine!!! Do these classify as beer?

Cheers IanK

Pffft...

Obviously never tasted a good craftbrew... which is a shame as Victoria has some of the countries best. Take the Victorian High Country Brewery Trail that will open your eyes..

As for the snails, yeah go ahead use anything made by Lion Nathan or CUB, it's not worth drinking anyway..

Hi I once had a problem with snails in my DWC and the snails were feasting on the roots of the plants. No amount of cleaning, screen or filters helped. Then a half dozen convict cichlids were placed in the tank and presto...they ate up all the snails in no time. Some other species like sunfish and loaches are also good snail eradicators. Try it. I know it works. :D

Sprinkling lime dust over the growbed surface stops snails and slugs very quickly.

It is for the snails :)

It only needs a sprinkling to stop them.

by lime we are referring to builder's lime? Slugs are KILLING me atm, so I am VERY interested in this solution. I was going to put a ring of sea salt about my bed, but this may be better.

Yup, plain old lime dust/granules. I had one IBC that was full of slugs, (shady dampish area) and I could not get rid of them. A light dusting of lime over the top of the hydroton around the plants have totally removed all the large slugs, I have just treated again to get rid of the newly hatched ones.

+1 OBO,

I've got a couple of grow beds which may benefit from said remedy.

Himzo.

I was curious how the snail remedies were working out. I pulled out a radish that had split today and it had no less than 6 on it!!! :( This is the first time I've seen them in here and I would assume this is what is eating my young lettuce and cuke leaves. They look good in the evening, then I check them again in the morning and the leaves are filled with small holes. These little guys are about 2-3mm in size. Quite destructive little buggers!

lime worked well for me... when I was spreading it, I found a snail, I placed him on the treated area, and he was dead within moments.
my plants are recuperating despite me finding snails and slugs still... it really knocked the population about, only small ones exist, so I assume from eggs. beware though, do not us lime when rain is expected, it lasts only as long as it takes to rain, and the more often you use it, the harder your pH gets buffered.
