 The unfortunate thing is that the monster you see there was actually grown in my old system (an IBC with bathtubs)!!

Still, the BYAP system has been goddamn awesome compared to all the problems I had with those bathtubs.

Friend came over and REALLY wanted a fish, so I let him fish one out (lucky dip) and this was the result.

A little over 200 grams 24cm long(ish). I know there are bigger ones in there. But there are probably smaller ones too.

The dark colouring of your water could be the pellets your feeding Gemmell. I'm using Ridley's pellets I bought from Rupe and my water is pretty dark too. Doesn't seem to affect the fish's health.

That's interesting Geoff. It's definitely a colouring rather than a algae or sediment because it doesn't settle out or die when isolated with no movement or light for weeks!. Maybe it's a combination of roof and pelets?

You noticed anything like this rupe?

Yes and no... my tank is always a bit "dark"....

But have noticed that the trout tend to darken the water anyway... with very fine fish poop

Interesting. I can't see the fish which is annoying when people come over and want to see it. OF course if I feed them at the right time of day they go crazy and people like that.

here are some pics of the gb's:

Spring growth is fantastic. That and I buried a banana which I think had a good effect.

I actually found a dead 'un today. Anyone can ID what might be wrong? It shouldn't be DO unless there was a power out and my otto didn't kick in properly....

The gills are definitely flared, and they do look a bit red.... it really shouldn't be DO. Plus you'd think more than one would die if it was DO.

For anyone who hasn't got an Everready dolphin, they're a bloody asset. My water is DARK, but you whack a torch under water at night and I was able to spot this guy stuck up against the pump. Thank heavens I did.

Nice pic.

Do you have Water quality test results. Always help to take a test when there are any morts.

The flared gills can be a variety of issues, even just rigor mortis. If the gills are brownish and very slimy then you may have a nitrite issue.

Best to take a water test and check a sample of your other fish to check.

"Brown Blood" disease is very common in Trout regards high Nitrite concs. Nitrite decreases the efficency of Haemoglobin and oxygen attachment in gills.

Cheers

Yeh, should have included those results in the first place, but there was nothing out of place - Ammonia 0, pH 6.8, didn't measure Nitrite but I'm salted to about 2ppt so it shouldn't be Nitrite poisoning. The gills look a bit brown in the photos, but when I took a look at them they were not - it's just the shadow. In saying that, I'll measure Nitrite tonight just to be sure.

It MIGHT be my water clarity issues - the gills did look like they were very mucusy and full of little bits. So i chucked a couple of socks on the outlets to try and filter out the fine particles.

The other thing I thought it might be is just stress since we've been hunting around in there with a net trying to catch 'em to eat. Or it might be that the extra shell grit I added last Friday and the moves in pH were not well taken, or maybe just the fine solids (I didn't wash them)... or maybe the banana I buried on Friday....so many variables.

pH is certainly an issue, what is your alkalinity concs?

just adding shell grit is not a one stop shop answer. bicarb soda is soluble and will assist in rapid alkalinity buffering. shell grit is a long term solution.

The nitrification process produces nitric acid and will slowly drive your pH down with Carbon dioxide.

What aeration or degassing do you have?

Hi Gemmell,

Just read your thread - nice system!

A while back you mentioned you used aquarium wool to try & clear up the water - I assume this didn't work?

Are you still confident the source is the paint on the ceiling?

The water in my system is dark too & I'm trying to find ways to clear it up.

Scottie. :)
