Yep, ph induced ammonia spike!!!!
Best to keep pH between about 6.5 and 7.5 Plants like the 6.5 range but the bacteria and fish prefer a higher pH.
Do what Rupe said!

Wow. They look good. Cant wait for that type of growth.
What is the right time of year for pak choi?

Hi OU,

All Asian greens will bolt in hotter weather - in Melbourne they grow well in Autumn, winter and Spring. Shade can slow bolting as Spring warms up, and as others have said, lack of water or nutrients will make them bolt.
I have managed to grow Mizuna (in the ground) through Summer.

My system has been going along beautifully for a while now, plants healthy fish growing well.
Went out this morning to feed the trout and what a shock I got when all 25 were dead!
First time I've been in disbelief for a while, I was shocked.
To make it worse it was all my fault.
Had some visitors over late yesterday and I turned off the power so they could see the fish better, then I forgot to switch it back on. Been kicking myself all day. Its a mistake I'll never make again.
So they werent wasted I cleaned them all as they were about 200 grams each and had a few for lunch. I'll freeze the rest. One was munted, quite deformed, I'll post a picture later.
Now I have to get more fish now for the plants that are in there. Perhaps silver perch??
I've got heaps of trout feed left too because I bought one of those large bags.
Do Silver perch eat this feed too??
Devastated with the loss and I am well and truly hooked with aquaponics.

Bummer... you might as well go for Silvers... if you can get them... sounds like they're in short supply...

Think Gigi was the only place that had any....

Silvers should take the trout feed... although if it's a floating pellet it might take them a while to get used to it...

HI OU,

I bought some silvers recently in Vic and they have been dropping like flies - F&F took a look and suggested they were really too small considering the temps we have in Melb at the moment (9.5-12C water temp). Tried to salvage some by making a nurse tanks with a heater, but they didn't like my transfer so died too.
Luckily the fast ones in the cold tank couldn't be caught so are still there - but not many now! So beware of small sp in cold water is all I can say. You may have warmer water over there...

What's the lower recommended water temp for SP fingerlings?

We're picking some up from Gidge fish this weekend, they're apparently 50, 60 and 70mm long... Water temp on Mum's system was 13 deg on the weekend, not sure about Dave's system, but I'd anticipate it being similar.

I was told by the fish farm in Vic they coped OK with 12C but F&F thinks otherwise - their rapid deaths seems to agree with him!
He suggested 18C to me, so a small heated nurse tank might save yours.

What water temp is Gidgi holding them at???

At that size, you might get away with it... but if possible you might be better holding them in a quarantine tank, salted....and heated to around 16-18... until your tank temps come up a bit...

Got some silvers today, some quite large.
When I put them in, to my surprise there was one trout swimming around that survived from the masacre last weekend.
What a survivor! 25 dead but 1 survived.
Hopefully he'll get on with the silvers.

While the trout haven't eaten any of the Silvers I left when I stocked the trout in... well not that I know of anyway...

I've found the trout bully, chase and generally harrass them to the point of exhaustion and death... think a lot has to do with relative size and stocking density...
