depending on size ivan generally around 12 per kilo, $2.50 each is about the norm in Perth, a few country market days I have been to are about $19 per kilo, I suppose $30 not bad considering a drive this way would cost about $40 in fuel, but then you would get much more than 12 I suppose, I got close to 80 at a guess maybe more, many small ones suitable for the tank, but the small ones taste ok as well

Well the maximum I am looking for is about 20 at this stage. What is needed to catch yabbies anyways? From the dam I mean...

Firstly Ivan you need a willing dam owner to let you have some yabbies, failing that a bullet proof vest, I will get a pic of a typical yabbie net and post after lunch, but if your not kitted up I would probably spend the $30 and buy them, will be far cheaper, but most dam owners with yabbies will have nets or pots, you need to put some hides in tank, check out my pics on page 1 or 2 or maybe 3 of my system,

if your keen to catch your own yabbies you can try the ponds in the gardens at the casino!!!! and the one across the road (great easten highway)
you may not believe me but they are in there! and i can't see you getting in trouble fishing for them in there, i would just throw a trap or two in!

Well don't have a bullet proof vest and that would cost more than $30, maybe I should spend the $30 and be done with it. Hopefully there are males and females in the lot and let them multiply.

Funny how things become apparent when you are looking for it...

After what grunta said about ponds in the casino having yabbies... I was driving around today noticing ponds around my area, these ponds have been around for some time... and usually have water in them regardless of winter or summer. What are the chances of getting yabbies in them???

What are the laws against fishing something out of the water on land that I suppose belongs to the council??

I think it's OK in some councils Ivan, but would have to check local rules, chillidude found out from Fish WA that you don't need a license to catch them

Yep, Ivan, you don't need a licence to fish for yabbies - just make sure you don't "accidently" have any marron in there or you will get hammered. Not sure about any council regs though - check if you but it shouldn't matter - all bodies of water come under some shire/council.

Don't know if you remember the thread Nocky but I said some senior looking guy explained to me that I didn't need the licence for yabbies - I saw him on TV the other night - it was the Fisheries Minister. More senior than I thought.

Hmm... wifey did some research into catching yabbies. Apparently there are different zones for WA, and moving of yabbies in and out of the zones may not be allowed, etc.... Well I will look further into this...

Ivan I can't find anywhere that it is against regulations to move or catch them, chillidude has the info from God himself, they are actually considered a pest and threaten marron breeding, like redfin, fisheries actually request if you catch a yabbie keep it and don't let it back to the water ways, you may also find this useful http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/IdCr ... Id2004.pdf

Ivan. it may be easier to buy some to start off. It'll be interesting to see how long they last. My wife threw a small packet of corn kernals in the f/t and they were gone in about 3 minutes.

Yabbies do fine, just usually you end up with only 1 or 2 in a tank
