An added benefit of carrots is letting them flower -- they are one of the best attractants for bees. We sow carrots at the base of our fruit trees, and if we get the timings right, the carrot flowers will bloom at the same time as the fruit trees attracting the bees to the vicinity. For those who don't have this problem -- bees are becoming very rare in suburban Perth so complete pollination is getting more and more difficult.

P.S. Many, many years ago, apiarists used to gladly leave hives in your healthy, chemical-free backyard; they'd do all the maintenance and whenever necessary they'd collect the honey and give you a free jar (and of course some honeycomb!). Does anyone know if this still happens? All we can find in the Yellow Pages are bee keepers who rent out their bees during the flowering season.

I'm lucky enough to have a beekeeper next door to me Bunson... 6 hives on his back verandah...

Reckon I might have to charge him rental for providing a source of nectar for his bees...

I'd not had much luck with carrots in my gravel beds in the past and figured it was because the gravel was a bit to heavy. But, we threw some seeds into a bluemetal bed here at the shop and the carrots grew really well.

Not really.. I was surprised.. Thought "Gee Mitch, why did you plant carrot seed in the blue metal bed, they will struggle," but ended up with some nice big carrots.
