According to my source DP Nitrate would not be the problem, fish can handle heaps of Rate, Dr Fran suggest a couple of hundred ppm or more, only will effect the reproduction of fish when subjected to high levels over a long term, we only have trout for a short term and don't breed.

And again... and again... Nitrates < 500... are not a problem... unless for extended periods... during spawning etc... and again...

Coz, we might as well use them... as we filter our water....

Otherwise we'd just have to throw the water away.... and might as well just run aquaculture...

It does not take long for nitrates to reach 500, and deaths will ensue, it just takes a while to kill. If it was nitrates then the damage began at least 6 months ago.

In Fundamentals of aquacultural engineering By Thomas B. Lawson it is wrote:
Nitrates are the least toxic of the inorganic compounds. The effects on aquatic organisms are similar to nitrite having to do with osmoregulation and oxygen transport, but the concentrations at which fish are affected are much higher. The 96 hour LC50 value of NO3-N to many fish and invertebrates lies between 1,000 and 3,000 mg/L (Wickins 1976; Colt and Tchobanoglous 1976).

As a side note... BlueGill are one of the highest nitrate resistant fish...

P.S ...

Toxicity of nitrate is also determined by the availability of oxygen, if there is inadequate oxygenation, fish are more sensitive to nitrate than when the oxygen level is adequate.

If your oxygen is low, nutrients high (nitrates).... then your system will probably be suffering algael bloom problems, pH fluctuations, and carbon dioxide saturation...

In others words... really poor water quality... these things will kill your fish before the nitrate does...

I think he's still undecided, perhaps we need to run a trial... Any volunteers for attempted Piscicide?

Could it have been from high Nitrates?

They are known to cause long term organ development problems...
