My spare pump was in when I reached a little deep to scoop out dead fish.
I got a nasty buzz. will this be harming my fish?

More importantly ,, it could affrect future kitten-pukats. Don't you have a safety fitted? ( earth leakage/core balance), SAFETY switch AN ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE !!!!

I am aware of power requirements for safety
I believe my question was regarding fish
Also the zapping is not due to earth leaking, but more probably a capacitance issue with the pump.
Still it shouldn't happen.
An RCD will not detect a water soaked active, if it is nicely insulated by a plastic tank, that is until you are already dead.
They're not safety switches, that is a misnomer.

Does anybody have an answer re fish that's not OT?
Please excuse my shitty attitude, but expiring fish = expiring patience.

Pity you didn't save some of the old water to test.

Hi KP:
A new thought. Have you put anything on the plants or have you had any thing different on your hands. I remember EB lost a batch of fish because he was using Tea Tree Oil to heal a cut. Also be careful of changing the water too much as you loose the essential bacterias. I had a large fish loss as after I lost some I started changing water and caused more loss. Of course I have tiliapa and dont know any thing about raising other types of fish, but maybe this is useful.

Hi KP,

sorry to hear about the fish losses.
just a thought, your recent yard work, where you put the two grow beds in the front yard. Is that treated pine they are framed with? if so is there any way that water may be splashing onto these and leaching back into the system? Rain etc..

Also when the work was done is there any chance some sort of chemical might have gotton into your system during construction. scoria was washed properly wasn't it?

If these two grow beds aren't conected to the system yet, then disregard.

H.

KP, I had a similar thing happen - in the morning they were fine, in the afternoon they were floating, or swimming near the surface, and were dying in front of my eyes. I lost 40 that day. I did a water change, and I scooped the bottom with a net, and I took off some of the fittings that went to the growbeds. I thought maybe there was some decaying food or something else nasty stuck in the pipes. That's a good point actually, have you stuck a hose down the pipes to see if maybe one has someone made it's way half way along a pipe somehow?

Umm, other than that, I don't know what else to do. Take the pump out and check that none of them have been sucked into the inlet (a few of mine had been gutted by the power of the pump, so there were fishguts somewhere, which is why I took off bits of pipe).

When I put the trout in, I put anti trout filters over the pipes... nice tip though, I'd never have looked there for them!

Treated pine it is, however the Gbs are plastic troughs, they're not filling 100%, but it is possible that rain is washing in.
I'm more concerned that there's something nasty on the ground that washed in over the concrete.

I habe 80% certain I have been overfeeding though, The trout used to keep their tanks spotless, yet now I notice there is gunk on the bottom. Either they've been overfed, or they went off their food, and I just kept feeding.

Some of the extra particulate in the browns tank came from the extra pumping I was doing, I whacked the pump into the sump, and it dredged up some serious ick. I stopped it after about 45 seconds, but the water hasn't been clean since.

OK, got home and checked the system.
No dead rainbows.
6 dead browns

I hope I'm not talking too soon :-(

Population is down 35% and deathrate down 50%
This has to be positive.

Why do you think there's so much stuff gathering in the sump... I'm assuming your sump is returned from your growbeds... :dontknow:

Didn't you have a similar problem last year?
