hey steve,

i gotta say your project sounds exciting and like a whole lot of fun.

to hijack your thread.

i plan to do similar with the waters down in the south west. i would love to isolate and breed as many of the water dwelling species as possible. i have a feeling that there is a great potential of extinction of many of them, as the south west rapidly develops and water ways are more and more polluted. hopefully i can successfully breed them for long term survival before its to late.

i'm optimistic its not too late.

all the best with your project. can't wait to hear how you go.

I dont think its pollution that is going to cause extinction of any species in the SW of WA. The biggest problems are the declining rainfall and the fact that many waters are now being tapped into to provide future water for the rapidly expanding Perth. As far as endangered native fish species go the main two are the Trout Minnow (which is also found in the Eastern States) and the Salamander Fish which from what I have read is almost impossible to keep alive in captivity.

It would be nice to breed the eels, but apparently its not even possible commerically, as they travel out to the ocean, spawn, and the little elvers swim back inland. I think this is right!

I need to get out more, there are heaps of nice little places just north of here, might make same day trips on sundays with the GF instead of sitting infront of the PC.

Steve, you're right, eels go to the Sargasso (sp??) sea off Brazil to spawn then travel back to where they left from - pretty amazing!
How'd the fishing go?

Didn't end up going anywhere yesterday, just finnished some lunch and might pop out for a bit now, been trying to call my mate that backs onto the creek, fishing for eels sounds more attractive when i have a freshly brewed coffee in my hand ;)

very good points troutman,

makes me sick to think about the water wastage in the city and how the answer is this reckless band aid approach of tapping into precious natural waterways.

i am interested in working with the hairy marron from margret river as i believe it is at threat. i have tried to contact the fisheries about it as they are restricted but no answer. gotta love gov agencies.

Bio-Farmer, it sure does seem crazy that we are destroying the waterways of the south west in an effort to keep Perth supplied temporarily with water. I saw something on TV today and it showed how much water was in Lake Argyle. Apparenly it holds 9 times as much water as Sydney Harbour!! Eventually, if current weather conditions continue, we will have to access our water from the north. We just need someone with enough guts to get the ball rolling.

As for the hairy marron, I know fisheries was involved with trying to remove the normal marron from the Margaret River system. I havent heard much on that lately other than they were not going to allow any commercial marron farms on the Margaret River system to farm normal marron in case any escaped.

Bad enough the locals 'Removing' marron, then touros', now the gov'!
So many people raid prive dams comando style for the prized marron, dodging shot gun toting farmers...
Sweet delicate flesh after purging(2-3days).

BK, dunno about bag limits, but i think you're meant to release berried female if you catch any.

I remember why i hate fishing so much.............cause i never catch a bloody thing. There were about 6 HUGE goldies like about the size of a pint glass  a white three red ones and dark ones. They kept teasing me, but i couldn't catch them. should have seen them breaking the water as it got darker, going for the insects. Any one have an idea as to the best way to catch them? I'm going back next weekend under the guise that i'm doing the water way a favour as they are not native............ ;)

i'll put that down as one option. My only consolation is that i got a bucket of creek weeds filled with all manner of little beasties, one of which i thought was a tadpole..........i've just filled one of my spare tank with this muck, and as the water was settling from a deep brown murk, i realised that the tadpole was no less than a bloody mosquito fish. Ratbad fish that they are. Yet another brilliant introduced animal in the same category as cane toads........don't do what their mean to, bread rampantly, and harm the natives. i wish i had some barra  they would make light work of him.
