Consensus rules - compressor disconnected and aerator installed 550l/h using 2 lines, got two of those 'air curtain' sinking flexible pipes installed now.

Our system is now home to about 36-38 redclaw!!! so we have a need for the air now :D doing a bit of a trial at the moment with boxes to house the crays so we can still chuck in SP later.

Thanks for the concern re compressor.

Oh and Mike, get on with it mate :lol:

I have never truly understood the meaning of consensus ,, it seems to be a yuppy word for " we gotr what we wanted and convinced you to be happy" :)
AHH the MAJORITY or very happy that the compresser is gone , happy fish , happy BYAPer's.

So we now have the herb GB planted out with an assortment of stuff the boss likes to add at cooking time to keep me filled out nicely. The FT has been stocked with about 60 fish from our dam, just gambesii I think, not really going to get much from them, but we know the water is ok for fish at the moment and when we get to stock it with something like jade perch or barra, the dam fish will also add to the food chain, but if we get SP (as I'd like) the little guys can still hang around nicely.

Wifey wants to get some air stones in there to aid with O2 levels and we need to get a test kit to do the testing, but for now it's 'cycling' is that the right term?

Just be aware that it is a crime to move or keep the dambusia, I know that they are great food but some shit is best kept to your self, anyone can read this, mate!
Not having a go, my fish love a treat aswell but you got to watch your ass these days!

So we did a bit of shuffling with the FT today/tonight.

We got 43 redclaw yesterday arvo, looked through them for the largest females and a large male, all went into an aquarium in the house. Although while we where selecting our 'soon to be breeders' (fingers crossed) we came across a girl who had berries!!! Imagine that, she's come from an open, outdoor pond, which must have a temp of low teens and she has berries!!! :cheers:

Anyway, so we have 5 in the aquarium tank, we switched the heater on once they where all in, and it took nearly 3 hours to reach 24 deg, so hopefully that was enough time for them to acclimatise while it was heating up.

The rest of the crew, 38 of 'em went into their FT bottom flats, they are share accommodation, but not so tight and tiny as those bottle type bachelor pads (EDU's?) They are about 0.3sqm for each crate and each crate has 1-2 males and 3-4 females in them, with gravel and a few 200mm lengths of 50mm PVC for hidding holes.

File comment: The FT isn't Houdini proof, so we had to rig up something to accommodate the redclaw

The cray man said we should feed them about once a f/n while it's still cold. So we have about a f/n to let them settle in, re-arrange the furniture, say g'day to their flat mates - you know the deal and also a f/n to fix up our feeder tube system. I figure a tube big enough to drop pellets down, some crenelations on the bottom of the pipe with a cap/base on the tube to stop the redclaw climbing up it to escape. What do you think? will it do the job, should I make mods?

Bentaz - had a closer look and they are guppies 8)

Thanks though, it's prompted me to take a look at our local 'noxious species lists' and see what is listed.

For those in Qld, these are the declared $200,000 fine ones;

and these are the soon to be $200,000 fine ones;

For anyone who doesn't know that some species are not to be kept - alive or dead!!!

Sorry mate... the pending noxious list is a "national" approach... and will be legislated across all states and territories...

Bentaz, what Chiclids do you have, I can't see a generic ban on the 'soon to be list' Bit of a bummer if they end up banning all chiclids, they are a hugely popular fish in aquariums. I haven't had anything to do with aquariums since I was gonna take over the world breeding and selling guppies at age 14, but I recall some really nice fish from the chiclid family.

Last week representatives of the pet industry attended a meeting in Canberra with officials from Department of the Environment & Water & also the Bureau of Rural Sciences. We are advised from this meeting that they intend, effective 7th November, to recategorise ALL of the fish species currently on their “Grey List” as “Noxious”.

This would result in all of these fish being illegal to sell or even keep privately, with the sanctions of fines & possible convictions for anyone caught doing so, & the seizing & destroying of the fish.

The full grey list can be viewed on http://www.brs.gov.au/ornamental , but includes amongst others most of the large American cichlids, all arowanas, bichirs, knifefish, stingrays, eels, koi & a number of large catfish & “exotics”. In effect almost all large fish kept in the hobby today.

It is also important to stress that this list is not final, & other species can be added later.[/quote]

So another AP weekend, well closer to all week being devoted to AP :lol:

Anyway, we now have the second GB in place for our system it looks a bit homemade to begin with...

and then after a bit of sprucing up and it looks totally fine...

So we are still waiting for our 12v bilge pump and solar panel, test kit all that stuff, but I figured I can get the 2nd GB in and then I can get on with a bit of the 'house building'

Just a quick thank you to Mike (aka Burnsy) for afflicting me with this addiction, not a thing progressed on the house for a week solid! Thanks Mike!! :lol: I've decided regardless of when the rest of the gear comes, I'll do the capping for the GB's and then switch focus back to the house building.

We have Butterkofuri, green terrors, red devils, flavus, tangarine zebras and a frontosia, The red devil will be banned here in QLD at the end of the year but the VIC DPI updated noxious list does not have many Cichlids on it lucky for me.

Bentaz, thanks mate.

Yeah, I reckon it's not bad for a fella who wrestles logs for a living. Wifey reckons it looks far from homemade - that's the important part :lol:

So as promised today was a day devoted to adding the capping to our GB's.

Both GB's capped off with bluegum (forest red gum for our southern readers) I decided I wasn't happy with the results of 'dressing' the FT capping with the electric plane and set up the moulder/planer. Sent all the bits through and gave 'em 3 coats of oil, so I had to let them dry before getting them near the GB or FT and cut up pipework in preparation for our 12v gear turning up to wait for the oil to dry.

File comment: Notice the little chrome handle on the bottom GB? That's dead space I decided to turn into a storage box, for fish food, test kit, aerator etc.

Trying to convince the boss we need Hydroton in the GB's to aid in water hydration across a larger area, or maybe do an auto siphon to manage fill and drain???

Well gotta get on with building the actual deck - that'll give me time to think of a way to get my water temp up so I can get some SP in there???
