When this topic was first mentioned on the forum I called the guys since their office is literally 5 minutes from my apartment. They don't have a space open to the public, but said I could make arrangements and come see them at some point. Frankly, I'm not convinced it's worth the bother.

Bill just came across it, I don't know much about AP in the US, or in OZ for that matter  but was there for a bit of a laugh as I didn't think the systems were that advanced, I thought they might be taking the piss out of us  but the book on how to build below pic for $35  that I can't believe

Rupe is right, do anything to extract a $ from the uninformed,

I'm not defending it, Rupe is right!, it's shameful and disgusting.
Would be sweet to see free pamphlets available to build cheap starter/intro systems that would work.

No worries bill, no need for pamphlets just get them to join this forum for free, if people are looking at the book on the net, they may as well read for free here

Or they can download the "barrelponics" manual for free...

Their is a niche for kit aquaponic systems... well designed and proven...

But dinky di little kitchen "farm in a box" and/or "eco-egg" type systems will only result in failure to meet expectations, particularly with regard to aquaponics as a "sustainable food production system... and generally muddy the water for all those involved in aquaponics... whether that be serious kit suppliers, or backyard growers that have regulations imposed on them by councils due to "mis-information", failed hype etc..

No offence to those that have started with aquaria based systems as a proof of concept...

But such "kits" as the "Little Tokyo"... perhaps better named the "little jokeyo".... are really no more than scince experiments.... incapable of producing any real amount of edible fish and/or vegetable produce...

Ok... the "jokeyo" is probably priced fairly in regard to the cost of the tank, liner and other materials... and appears well made.... but IMO... as an "aquaponics" system...

It's only an experiment... not a sustainable productive food system... a marketing joke...

And hopefully a short-lived and commercially unsuccessful joke at that...

agreed rupe, the mob I started the thread about are doing a 7 gallon system with a 12" square grow bed, hardly can be a Farm in a Box  and for around $400au they ask, you could build a much better set up, I don't think my trout would like a 7gl system, and I could grow maybe 1 caulie, but as AP is the buzz word of the naughties (wonder what next decade will be  ) a lot of cowboys will jump in and make cowboy cheap and nasty set ups that will fail and charge over inflated prices, and then give a bad name to businesses like BYAP, was reading in another forum, someone who started up and can't get his simple system working and has NFI how to fix it :?

I like the idea of aquarium systems being hooked up to aquarium that people are already into taking care of and just want a way to avoid having to do the weekly water changes to deal with Nitrates. Little systems like that seem to me like a great way to save the planet just a little bit by saving an extra 5-20 gallons of water per week (more or less depending on the size of the aquarium.) And a neat way for people to grow some herbs or salad right in their own home.

You are right, the farm in a box set ups are mostly little more than proof of concept little science experiments dressed up to look like fancy planters. They do have some larger systems but I wasn't impressed by them.
