"blackened" bugs Mmmmm....sounds good.

Chappo, the catfish feed most catfish farmers in the south (USA) uses fishmeal made exclusively from rendered catfish offal supplied by the catfish processors that buy the live catfish from
the catfish farmers. Recycling at its best. The catfish and chicken industry have found feed formulations directly impact flavor.

Good to see the over-priced and "protected" catfish industry is supplying a good by-product.

I remember reading somewhere that the Vietnamese where talking about being able to produce fish oil from catfish as a diesel replacement??? And much cheaper? Interesting.

Now wait a minute Chappo, quality has a price in any good
product- especially US Farm Raised Catfish. People know where it comes from and whats in it, or should I say not in it (i.e. carcinogens and illegal antibiotIcs banned in the US).

Or i could go to a US grocery store and pay the same price as
my trusted US catfish for an inferior imported chinese tilapia and or catfish grown with no rights nearly slave labor and God knows what chemicals. So the import guys make a heck of alot more profit than anyone in the US catfish industry. Vietnam and China have learned a little Malachite Green sure makes the fish healthy looking, doesn't matter its a carcinogen. Do you use it in Thailand?

And I would like to know where you read Vietnamese catfish oil is made into biodiesel for a cheaper price than what? Non sustainable crude based diesel pumped from the ground?
Very interesting indeed.

Missionary man, my apologies for interrupting your thread. Sounds like a wonderful idea to start an aquaponics system for an orphanage.

Bio-diesel from catfish ? I will believe that. I grow some Pangasius hypopthalmus (Viet cats) and I can tell you that the bellies, which are by-products of the fillet process, are all FAT.

Probably for cheaper than making bio-diesel from virgin veggie oils of different types.

JD ,, where do you read that USA catfish are superior?
I read that thousands of deliveries of seafood from Vietnam where tested for contaminents and found to be clean?

I use NIL chemicals in Thailand:) OOPS I do use urea to control algal bllom.

I read about the catfish oil for deisel on the internet. Yes price comparison was aginst crude oil produced product.

I'll try and hunt down a link.

Chappo, I didn't read that anywhere........first hand experience, taste tests, have you eaten any US Farm Raised Catfish?.. they are good. Just ask TCLynx?
......keeping the dollars in the local economy. "Protectionism"? Most definitely. Keeps food on my table too. Wouldn't you rather buy a local product, than one shipped half way across the world?

Do you get alot of US fish imported into Thailand and Aussie markets? Really curious here, how does US product, if any compare price wise?

on the "internet"? The Mekong Times?
And delivered to where Australia? or US. For the thousands that were clean a certain percentage are not. What if you ate from that small percentage? Worth the risk?

I think not... that's why we are all here isn't it? So we know the source and quality of our own food. We could argue the above forever. Wanna beer? Lets agree to disagree and drink to that. :drunken:  :drunken:

Why bother, I choose to believe that. Cris said those vietnam catfish are all fat in the belly. Very unlike channel catfish in US. Could be the diet

Cheers ,, first round is on me:)

I have a soft spot for Vietnam ,I have travelled there 11 times in the last 15 years , I love it's people and think they have had a really bad deal over the last 50 odd years , as for goods from China ,,,WELL ANY COUNTRY THAT ALLOWS POISON TO BE ADDED TO BABIES MILK , AND CARCENEGENIC SUBSTANCES TO BE USED IN CHILDRENS TOYS has definately lost my trust.

About the only USA goods we get here that I buy are Cherries ,,I guess because of opposite seasons,,, they are good quality but not exactly cheap ( about US$12 per kilo ,, oops about US$5 per pound.)

Keeping things VERY local is great , but closing borders against imports can have huge effects. For example ,, a product grown in Sydney Australia has many less food miles if sold in New Zealand than if it is sold in Perth Australia.

Smiles all round

In our "peak season" aussie cherries will often drop to about 85 Cents USA per pound.

Looks like I found the one thing cheaper in Aus:)

Truly , when I look through pricings on items in the USA I get crazy about why we pay near double here.
