Hi Stu,

Thanks for the information on the seed growing systems. I look forward to your future progress with interest.

You've got the greenhouse sorted and I share your optimism about the effect of the structure in winter.

I noticed the following and it attracted my interest.....

Quote:
I wish I did Silvers, but only because of the temp thing, silvers will definately be my next batch.

Have you considered Golden Perch rather than Silver Perch?

I've read recently that Golden Perch grow faster and are the preferred species for recirculating aquaculture systems......over Silver Perch.

I've eaten both......and I prefer Golden Perch.....particularly once they reach a good filleting size. I recall them as having less bones than Silver Perch.....but that may be a subjective obervation if the size of the fish was not consistent.

You're probably aware that Golden Perch are often referred to in SA as Callop. I've eaten fish out of the of the Murray River around Murray Bridge (no bed of roses itself) and the BBQ fish was very nice......and the fish had to be fairly tough to exist in that system....particularly in the face of plague populations of European Carp.

I keep Jade Perch currently......and I'm not unhappy with their performance.....but I'm going to include Golden Perch in the very near future.

I think you demonstrated courage in your choice of Barramundi and you'll no worse off for the experience........and hopefully you'll get to dine on your results for a long time.

If you haven't already done so, take a closer look at Golden Perch before you make the final decision.

GD, I saw Golden P at a local aquaculture place and he was pushing them pretty hard. Reckoned they were perfect for our systems and our climate here, although he did note that silvers are more tolerant of colder conditions.

I forgot to say before, I am not adding any oxygen to the troughs, the water spashes from one grow bed into one trough each and they flow into the sump, there is a pretty constant flow thru them, it takes 800 litres plus whatever drains out as they are filling (I estimate another 300 litres), to fill the growbeds and as soon as they empty, which takes about an hour, they fill again. So in that case, about 1100 litres of water flows through the troughs every hour. Do you think this will be enough, considering it is freshly oxygenated after flowing through the gravel beds?

gee, its only been about 8 months, and look haw far everyone has come!

I'm starting a thread under fish.

Feel free to contribute fish specs. I'll wait for a heap of posts, then collate them into one per fish type, which will mean deleting some posts.

Steve

I have had the tap open between the two tanks now for a few days, so I thought I would test how good the flow is between the tanks by comparing nitrates from each tank. I was very pleased to see the readings the same, looking somewhere between 40 and 80 I suppose. Only 7 of the larger fish in the poly tank, so flow must be good.

i'd say between 20 and 40 from the pics.

stu, can you give us a current pic of the plant load and gms of feed per day approximate? and is the NO3 static?

Will help with estimations for my system :)

I just weighed a days worth, came out at around 100 grams give or take a bit. They generally get more on the weekends

What I really need to do it try and weigh say 10 of the fish, so I can estimate a total population mass, and feed as a % of their body weight, although that may be getting a bit techo.

Pics of plants:

The nearly empty bed has a heap of seed in it, everything from corn to basil, so we'll see how they go. Also, BIL is comiong over tomorrow arvo to prune the trees, so things should really start to kick along :D
