Could have been Maurice Wison in 1933!

Nope... he died at the base of the North Col after he set out for the last time on 29 May, alone.

His body and diary were recovered a couple of years later...

In 1935, Eric Shipton led a small reconnaissance expedition to Mount Everest. They found Wilson's body at the foot of the North Col, lying on its side in the snow and surrounded by the remains of a tent which had been torn apart by the elements. A rucksack containing his diary was found nearby. The body was buried in a nearby crevasse.[24] It is assumed that Wilson died in his tent of exhaustion or starvation. The exact date of his death is unknown.

George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made an attempt on the summit on 8 June 1924 ... via the North Col/North Ridge/Northeast Ridge route from which they never returned.

On 1 May 1999 the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition found Mallory's body on the North Face in a snow basin below and to the west of the traditional site of Camp VI.

Perhaps it should be said that "Hillary & Norgay"... were the first sucessful climb to the summit... in as much as they actually both returned... and photgraphed it to prove it...

Rup,
Thanks for that, just going from memory! I can always be convinced otherwise. Marc Antony was wont to say that " show me factually that I am of incorrect thought, and I will change gladly"!
Pretty much sums up my sophistries.
Got home to have a nice little cab merlot, checked the forum and there ya go!
I really appreciate the social and interlectual intercourse that this forum (and others!) provide for an AP tragic like myself.
Have a great w/e.

Cheers IanK :bigsmurf:

I protest. Godwin's Law requires that the person compare someone or something to Hitler or the Nazis. I was just stating the theory that the Germans provided a bunch, if not most, of the post-WWII rocket technology. Also, check yer genders.

I honestly do want to know, though. According to wikipedia (yea, I know), Woomera wasn't established until '47, and the Jindivik didn't fly until '52. But the Los Alamos rocket program was active, and the first v2 was launched in '46. My googling isn't turning up much more about the jindivik.

I do know how parochial we Americans can be, and I'd like to learn another perspective on this subject. Like I said, having this knowledge coming from Australia would be good news.

I hadn't known that. Thanks.
