Hi. TOTAL HEAD is the sum of the suction head ( vertical distance of the water level from the pump) and the discharge head ( vertical height of the discharge outlet.) Manufacturers usually rate their products at zero head.

What sort of pump is that Nocky?

yeah what he said!

Almost correct Kuda, I went for a 12,000lph Tornado from rockaroundtheblock, super quiet and at a head of 1.5mts I am getting around 9-10,000lph the 10,000lph model only uses 135watts, tornado range can be seen here http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/ca ... asp?cID=63 from middle of page down, also if you click on more info for a particular pump it will give LPH at head heights, also whilst in more info you can click on pump selector and choose the pump you are looking at, put in head height and pipe length and it will give you power consumption, plus LPH through various pipe sizes, excellent pumps as they can handle 8mm solids and also small grids cover so fish cant get munched, Outback Ozzie converted me and he also swears by them, stole a pic from OBO's thread, Thanks Col

I think you are talking about different pumps aquaponics mainly use submersible pumps and head height as the height above the water level you are trying to pump [if say you have a pump in 4 metre deep water the pump in the bottom and you are pumping to grow beds a metre above that's a 1 metre head]

No worries Kuda, Good to see your reading and paying attention  but post 1 was the plan that changed 100 times by the time I built it
I also have a 4500lph resun pump, same style as above and runs at 95wts so these pumps are good an cheap to run, the 4500lt pump is having a rest ATM but went solid for over 12 months and cos under $100 posted, also have resun 1200lph pump driving the missus system that has been going for about 15 months now (started in my first system until I discovered it was about 1/2 the size I needed) that draws about 35wts but hasn't missed a beat, cleaned it once

Yes our plans rarely stay the same... my thread is seriously lacking content... the system has almost doubled.

That's right F&F. Your effective head is one meter because if your pump is submerged 4m below water level, your suction head is minus 4m. Sorry I was not very clear on that. Cheerz.

It's known as NPSH, Nett Positive Suction Head.
