What could have caused such a big fire though?? I have blown up 150AH batteries before, and there is not really a huge amount of heat created....not enough to burn a shed down anyway. They just sort of explode and spray acid everywhere. Even the flammable gasses that are formed would sort of explode in a flash, not really a big fire...unless there was other readily flammable stuff really close by.

OBO, my suspicion although I am no real expert, the readily flammable stuff is the insulation material that was used to line the internal of the shed as well as the fish tank. I recall Lungy mentioning they were aircell. Searching the internet, the aircell website stated that the material is combustible and may evolve hydrocarbons when heated to decomposition.

I know I might be overstating this slightly but it is worth considering. There is an Australian Standard in regards to the use of lead acid battery in enclosed areas because the charging process produces oxygen and hydrogen. Hence depending on the type of batteries (regular type used in cars or valve regulated used in many battery back-up systems), the regular type may release some hydrogen into the atmosphere. As such, it is recommended that these batteries are installed in well-ventilated areas. Hydrogen only requires 20microjoules of energy (ie spark) with the presence of oxygen (air) to ignite.

Batteries were glass mat sealed gel type valve regulated ex telecommunication batteries and the shed was well ventilated with a whirlygig on roof with door of shed left open so build up of gasses seems unlikely.
The insulation was the fibreglass batt type with foil covering used on most warehouse roofs and not aircell which I was originally going to use.
The heat produced would have been from the other stuff I had stored in the shed ie wooden shelving and workbenches, plastics etc

A half $MILLION? Hard to believe how bad they can get if let go wild! Reward them when they are good... beat their arses when they are not. My parents didn't take the word of a kid over and adult. If an adult went to my parents my dad would give them a choice they beat my butt or he would. He always did, it wasn't one of those things where maybe he would let me go this time. It was Guaranteed!
