I have heard that during the drought that ppl selling water saving gear became mercenary  , but $2.5M??? I'd like to see you make that selling tanks now that there're so many cutthrroats in the industry.
My local computer store is selling rain water tanks

I wish also, I ment 2.5 dollars
The computer store wouldn't happen to be ASC tanks would they.
The industry isn't all that bad but there have been some cut throats come into the market of late. the guys you mentioned cut my margins from 25% to 7% in 1 foul swoop, sometimes much worse. They are selling a $5400 tank for $50 profit????????????????? . If the client pays by c/card they loose money. We used to make $800 on that tank until they came along 6 months ago.
Thank god they can hardly be found on the net, unlike us.

Same use to happen in the Building industry when things were quiet, (going back 30 years for me hence the wage quotes, but still happens today) we quoted jobs to make around $100 a day wages, other nationalities (mainly) would quote to work for $30 - $40 a day and do there own labouring , no way we would try and out quote that it was actually better to go on the dole as you had no overheads by doing that, that is a big % drop Darrell but I suppose these days it's not about profit, but survival in industries similar to yours, I'm glad I got out of business, last business I had was Computer Sales and Repairs excellent money, plenty of work, plenty of stress  plenty of people calling at any time of the day or night, what did it for me was GST which made plenty of doing the governments job for them, now missus works in education and I have an excellent job we take home plenty of $$$'s she finishes at 3.30 and me 5 and that's it no more stress, paperwork and trying to fight your opposition for a $, word gets around Darrell that there is good money in water tanks, every cowboy gets into it and don't care what they make, or what quality of tank or work they supply, leaves professional people like yourself working for jack schitt

It is not all that bad in this industry as the tank boom started over 5 years ago and has long but finished. Alot of the cowboys have already left and lots of upstarts and big companies have gone bankrupt and more will go in the next few years. I came into this game only 18 months ago and every body in the industry said I was mad and that the industry was dead and I would not be in it for long. Well 18 months down the track with every month beating the last one in sales ( last month doubling ) this dead industry is serving me very nicely, concidering we are in a down turn? Cant wait to see what it is going to be like when we come out of this
When some of these cut throats move in and slash the prices on the products we sell I just look for others so we are not compairing apples with apples. Also if people see these too cheap prices many come to me and ask why the other guy is so cheap, you can probably guess what my responce is and quite often I still get the sale.
The other advantage I have is visability on the web. Almost all of the cut throats have no idea how to rank no1 in google and this is where we have it all over them, they have limited market penitration and thats fine by me. I also have a Plumbing company and sell other product online as well. No better way to diversify a bricks and motar business than online product sales.
I only started the online stuff because I was bored of sitting in the office all day answering a few Plumbing calls. Glad I got bored, it has worked out very well.
And BTW, I could hardly work out how to turn on a computer 18 months ago let alone type anything on one.
You can learn fast when your interested and dedicated.

my father in law was another one of the lucky 2409347, he said much the same thing nocky

personaly i never buy lotto my self, i always thought would be better to put the same amount into a seperate bank account, but somehow it never seems to make in there

IF i did and i won id put some in the bank and give a mill each to my family i would have to win 16 m just for the parents uncles and auntys then theres another 2 for siblings and 3 more for grandparents, and thats just on my side of the family, so 50 mill probably not goin to be enough is it :sigh:

Cheers
pete

Pete if I added what I have spent on lotto in 30 years I wouldn't have a mortgage  but I only do Saturday, never check the results and every now and then get a cheque in the mail, more like my donation to charity each week
RWTD I am in the farm machinery industry and like you have yet to see the impact of the recession, people in the City reckon their feeling it and unemployment is high in the city, but plenty of work down here, businesses here are employing backpackers because can't get WA people to leave the city for work :? yet they complain about being broke and car/house is getting repo'ed :blackeye:
Like you I'm wondering what it will be like when the recession is over  good to see things are going well in business Darrell, it proves even in these so called times, "if your prepared to get off your arse, you can make a good living" so if your sitting on your arse and complaining about how bad things are, get off your arse and move around a bit, you will find things aren't that bad :bootyshake: :dontknow:

That's a sad indictment Nocky :-(

Luckily I'm not yet feeling the pressure of the recession. Due to council bureaucracy being what it is, projects need to be talked about for 2 years before we see any contracts. So we'll be fine for the next two years or so, then when everybody else gets out of recession, we'll be going in. Hopefully we can pick up enough short term contracts to cover us during that time...

Kuda we aren't feeling any effects of the so called recession, quite the opposite, farmers are spending big time, plenty of work here, just that the city folk that are feeling the pinch or lost their job don't want to leave their burb and do something different for a while, sad really when you have to use imported workforce when so many locals are out of work.
Things will keep going here, excellent rains and crops and sheep feed are magnificent, only thing that is hurting is my Super, last I checked we were looking at a -10% return, and our industry fund MTAA is one of the better ones :?

I agree rupe, our super fund predicted a small lose at the beginning of the financial year which has turned into a big one, if they know there going to loose then why the *frack* don't they 1) put it in a bank, or 2) put it in a big safe and wait for things to pick up, ridiculous, I worked out on the last prediction from super site, I will loose exactly what I put in this year  that was 3 months ago, hope things changed

I reckon all super contributions should be put into a "housing" fund... with a fixed interest return ... i.e 5%.... this would garuantee growth of peoples super above CPI rates...

And provide a permanent pool of funds for homebuyers (our kids)... at a fixed interest rate.. ie 5%...

Would remove the blood sucking banks from the equation, free other savings/capital for business investments... prevent the stupid up/down interest rate cycle and affect on homeowner repayments... garuantee peoples super.. and grow it...

You have a CHOICE ,, fixed interest of around 4,5% or the stock market at a good 15% ....., I agree the choice should be there ,, keeps the idiots money out of the stock-exchange :)
Minus 10% for this year ,, I'd check that as it will probably be more than that,.....,,,but HOW QUICKLY we forget ..... I think my returns where ..... 2005-2006 14%, 2006-2007 , 18% 2007 2008 16% ....., sure glad I CHOSE to be in the stockmarket invested super:) :)
Hate to steal from my children by taking 4.5% safety net.

My Father worked his "behind" off for near 30 years to pay a mortgage on a modest house ,, then the penny dropped, invest in Australias future , choose stable companies with good management .......... YEP the stockmarket ....., his wealth went from 1 house ,, to two houses and 3 million dollars in shares in the next 15 years. GOD I am blessed he didn't chose that 4% return from fixed interest.

Well it did if he/you cashed in his shares and invested in real estate.. and at the time he/you had a paper profit/value that you suggested... but what is the real value of your investment NOW... and what % growth does it represent on your initial investment today...

And how would that compare to a fix 4-5% compound interest on the same starting investment??? ...

Hey... if you want high returns from high risk,... fine... just know when to "fold them"...

I mean to say... you could double your money... by the toss of a coin...

But a profit is never a profit... until the chips are cashed in...

Oh, and we were talking Superannuation Funds Chappo... not personal investment capital... you can do both...

And if your Dad owns 2 houses freehold... and $3million dollars (paper value) of shares... he probably isn't too concerned with his super fund anyway... and happlily living off his dividends...
