Chernobyl, Chernobyl,Chernobyl...

This is what happens when idiots take out the cooling rods, just to see what will happen...

Extremely tragic event, but how many more Chernobyl's have there been?

And how many nuclear power plants are around today?

I'd be more worried about flying in a Boeing with their current record.

Fully agree with Chappo...

Unfortunately the Chernobyl argument means we continue burning lots and lots of coal in Aus, all because of the easy shock factor of Chernobyl, and no-one really looks or talks about why, it wasn't because of design, it was stupidity, and yes this has caused design changes, to remove that area.

Enough of a rant...

Thought that post might stir up a hornets nest...

And I agreed that currently solar and wind can't provide base load power... and even concede that nuclear does have a pretty good safety record in terms of actual power production...

But when things go wrong... they go very wrong... with devastating consequences...

My biggest beef with nuclear ... is more the resultant pollutant by-products and disposal...

In terms of Australia... the amount of investment and lead time to build nuclear stations and train the personel.... would be better spent and give faster results... if invested in alternate technologies ... IMO....

Yeah Chappo.... tidal/wave power is an, as yet, unrecognised technology with vast potential.... the wave power station moored off Port Kembla harbour has just recently been upgraded to double its capacity... and a second unit is about to be commissioned..

All these things are relative....

It's like the arguments on recycled water that have gone on in Aus, and the move towards desalination, yet the small amount of understanding in the public just what impact the super saline water has on the environment.

Everyone went on about "I'm not drinking poo water, no way, never", yet if they have been to Europe, that is exactly what they have done. Instead we are now building these desal plants at an alarming rate, and are wondering why our reefs are dying, derrr....

There is a difference between sea water and super saline water, so people need to look at ALL the facts...

Trouble is there are too many Chernobles out there that get the focus, rather than the bigger picture.

I could go on about the energy required to build solar cells, effects from waiting and continuing to burn coal in the mean time, the fact that there is much "known" technology out there, but unfortunately scare mongers are winning the fight. We all need to brouden our thought processes, and not just read the eye catching headlines, read some of the smaller articles written by our world leading scientists (not just the crack pots).

Hmm maybe a new rant topic should be started on this, maybe not, I will end up wasting too much time fighting off the wolves
