Really I don't know I went to work 20 minutes away then got the call that the shed is on fire as soon as I arrived.
I suspect something went wrong with the batteries

OOH NO!!! What a bloody tragedy!!!
All those little fish and hard work. Still, I shouldn't remind you of that other than to offer my sincere wishes for a comeback.
If it was the battery, charger or other, please let us know, so we can all take steps to avoid any recurrence of such a heart wrenching event.
Kind Regards Ian K.

I don't think I'll find what caused it unfortunately there is not a lot left.
I had two solar panels going to a regulator charging 4 batteries which has been operating fine for 6 months with no heat being generated and plenty of ventilation so it is only a guess that the batteries are at fault.
Thanks for the kind thoughts I'll be back better than ever.

Overcharging batteries can cause them to overheat and pop.
Low voltage is a particular problem, as to get the same power you need much higher Amps.
based on V=IR this means that resistance must be MUCH lower.
that's why you use such bigger cables.

however, one loose joint can create a heap of resistance and therefore power loss, I have touched batteries and motor connections that singed my skin. Please make sure your connections are good. test the temperature off them as often as possible, and keep them tight.

Also be aware that water can be an issue, though it's normally a problem for higher voltage.

Lungy, to have lost all your fish is devastating - I know. I cannot begin to imagine how disheartening it would be to lose half your system and also maybe your shed too, I can't tell :-(
Please don't let it get you down, we'd love to see you up and running again.

Feeling for you,
Hamish.
