I am guessing the water temp has a lot to do with it. Donal from Flaherty's mentioned their water gets to 100 in the summer time and the fish grow rapidly. I'd say if they are growing well and seem healthy, then the food must be okay. We have someone coming next Friday coming for part of our extras and we'll do some weighing as we move them into their travel container to see how ours are doing. They do appear to be growing well and healthy - though maybe not as fast as those. :D

Maybe on this thread some Mossambique mouthbrooder (Mossambiques) enthusiasts can compare notes!

Anyone got any contacts in WA regards anyone who has red or pink varieties. (Fashionable in Florida in reataurants I believe!)

If I could get red or pink breeding stock .. I would love it .. these babies are amazing beautiful BIG fun to keep fish!

Hi, Johnnie,

I live in the Perth area, and am looking for a local source of tilapia fry. I had bred about 50 about 5 years ago, as a start to a hydroponics project. However, they all died during a lengthy power outage while I was at work.

I am now starting a serious hydroponics project at home, as I work toward food, water and power self-sufficiency for my family.

Do you know of a local source of fry?

Thanks.

Morris

I can get them for 25 cents each for small ones and $1 each for ones big enough to be sorted by gender.

Actually, I'm getting all I want for free right now since they are breeding

Well I'm talking about Blue Tilapia not the same variety as you are talking about.

I find that the more fish you have in the tank the less harm comes to the fish that are not dominating the tank. I think someone suggested 1 males and 5 females for breeding. When I had two fish in a tank the big bad male did a lot of damage to the other fish, but when there were 5 in the tank none seemed damaged.

Dan -

Have you tried using some kind of partial partition in the tank? It helps a lot.

i noticed yesterday that the two males have dug pits at oposit ends of the tank and they seem to stay in them while the femals seem to teas them by swiming back and forth between the two pits.

they are a realy awsome fish IMHO, the way the male displays and changes colour, great aquarium fish. love em and i havent tasted one yet! lol

Replace swsim with walk and it sounds very much like your average bar or night-club:)
