But these bear no comparison to the Giant Freshwater Prawn... Macrobrachium Rosenbergii....

Macrobrachium Rosenbergii are a "large" edible prawn wih great aquaculture and export potential...

Whereas Macrobrachium Australiense is relatively small and only really good for cleaning up algae and uneaten feed in the tank...

Well Rupert, the M.Australienese i've caught and consumed out DUbbo/Warren way would tend to disagree with you.
Regular hauls of hundreds out of dams,and the macquarie river, many bigger than school prawns and able to be butterflied and bbq'd on trips out there over the years.
even the smaller ones were great just boiled in salty water.
delicious.

I was asking Rob McCormack re: the Cherapin, and he reckons water temps below 22o will pretty much cut you off from doing anything...

so sounds like an energy intensive prospect to just keep your broodstock alive over winter....but would love to see someone pull it off, as those things are enormous...

Thanks chappo, but Neil @ AB wouldn't send me glass shrimp only mussels but will see about the Macrobrachium autraliensis as he didn't have them before, I have a $50 credit at AB so will be good if he can

Well the good news, Neil has got back the bad news he has no stock bad season for them and as a new venture will have to wait so Dagz I am relying onya now

Ah well...it looks like we are takin the little-uns out to Dubbo Zoo in August sometime after the school hols ..

.im just hoping there might be a few around as its gonna be pretty cold still and ive only ever caught em when its hot....at least if i do get some the colder weather should help the transport side of things as its a 4+ hour drive back here....

also hope the ones in the wild had a better season than the ones at Aquablue....

looks like its time to go to the B- shop and get me some transport containers and a couple of DC air pumps...and better get a few more mesh bait traps too....

Seems to be lots of interest in the Freshwater Prawn. What are the chances of keeping them in the metro Perth climate?
If it is good, I am sure my wife would be really interested.

In fact, I might need to expand my system coz she would probably get rid of all the fish and just have prawns.
Of coz that is provided these freshwater prawns we are talking about taste as good as other prawns (like banana prawns, etc).

Ivan ,, why not buy some , cook on the bbq and see how you like the taste. They are very nice eating but somewhat different to a classic salt-water prawn.

One thing to bear in mind...you will really need a massive tank/s to have a hope of getting a regular feed of them, (more like a farm dam actually) as in high concentrations, you are going to get masses of medium sized ones, and only a few big ,chunky ones.

having said that, its kind of uncharted territory keeping them in AP systems, so with regualr feeding and the right environment who knows??

Myself, i'm interested in them as fish food, as they will breed readily in a fishtank, and if i can get masses of them bredding in a heated fishtank environment over colder months, they may make a nice feed supplement for the fish. Also, will clean up algae in a sump tank really well.

Perth metro climate is fine for em i would imagine.

they are a very interesting critter, and it will be interesting to see how they work out in AP
