Tank overflowing today dumped a heap of water, Trout no doubt loving the fresh water but not good for the cycling I'm sure. Tested the water and all readings are down as to be expected so I have fed them again tonight. Will this week of rain slow down the cycling process.

Rupe,

Count me in for a 4mm bag of trout feed if it's not too late.

Any word on the 3rd BYAP tank?

FYI...trout are doing well. No more casualties. Water specs have now dropped down to acceptable levels.

Also, can you tell me what % of feed I should be feeding per day?

Cheers...Geoff

Thanks Rupe. I have been feeding at 2 to 3% thinking it should be 5% and wondering how the hell I was going to get them to eat at 5%.

The trout are active little critters arent they, they have great pleasure each morning at 5.30 am when its like nice and warm here - (not) of doing the tail flick thing that sprays water all over the work uniform and makeup, looking like a drowned rat, but I wouldnt swap them for anything, so much fun. Will be interesting to see the next power bill though lol

Had my first Trout death this morning although it looks rather like an SP to me Rup :o
Must have been a few sneaky ones that got away.
He looks a little bashed so I am thinking the Trout have given him a touch up.
I put him in the goldfish bowl inside to try to revive him and even the small goldies are beating him up.
My be time to add as fertilizer to the garden
Have a look at my test results thread and let me know what you think :)

Ah.. you got one as well... so did Bree...

Yep there's a few Silvers in with the trout that I couldn't separate at the time...

And yep... the trout sure do bully them... and out compete them for feed...

did my readings as well
Ammonia is at 1.0, - concerning
PH - 7.4
nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0

This week I have had 2 fish roll over belly up and hang around the bottom inverted, both still breathing when I pulled them out, still feeding 1 desert spoon morning and night, and they seem to be feeding actively,
will post pic of floater fish this arvo, not sure if trout or SP

Question , yes another, if slugs or snails or plant debris blow into the tank, will the trout eat them ?

Bree

Hi Bree
Is your system new also?
Trout will eat just about any bug, don't know about slugs but give it a go wont hurt them.
I have been feeding every second day and my readings are similar to yours.
Not game to feed every day let alone twice a day as yet until the Amo comes down a little.

The difference between Bree's feed ration and yourself Darrell...

Bree has a 3000L tank and 1000L sump.... with 4 500L growbeds and 50 trout...

In short, while also a "new" system, Bree has a greater filtration capacity and margin for error...
