I have often caught gulf shrimp in the bayous by punching a few holes in a couple of cans of dog food and tossing in the water and throwing a cast net over it as if to try to catch it. Catch a lot of shrimp that way. Also I know gulf shrimp often come to the surface at night during the full moon and crawl the bottoms all day. I do not know if fresh water shrimp behave the same.

No sweat Nocky, offer stands.

have just been talikn to friend and we are planning 3 day trip out west as soon as warms up enough to get some critters- round late aug- sept....
however, since im goin to pick up my IBC this arv (woo) im gonna be wantin to get goin quicker and may not be able to wait til then.....wil keep you posted on developments.

seriously, dont buy off them, toooootal rip off and a 900,000,000,000 % profit margin.....

im pretty confident i can get em breeding, and will be very interested to see how they function in Ap situations.

maybe we could work somethin out if Rupe is keen to try em too, as he seems to be travlin up n down coast a lot, he could drop in when i get some, bag n pack em properly and send to you?? or maybe i could figure way to bag without the oxy bottle......dunno sounds like a RIP sitch to me tho...

all speculation as i havent had the pleasure of meetin him yet, but seems pretty logical...

like i said, if you can hang out, and not get totally ripped off, could well be worth your while.

cheersz
D

I am in Dagz hands grunta, but I can't see breeding them a drama, not much info on the net only real nerdy scientific stuff, have found they lay eggs in nests and love algae and eat leftover fish food, and fish if they are hungry, but in a AP environment they shouldn't go hungry, Dagz keep in touch, I am prepared to help you out with fuel etc not worried to much on size, as mentioned rupe will vouch for me, but sooner would be better

Hey Nocky, just spoke to my mate Rob via email.

he used to run the crayhaven yabby farm at Karuah,NSW and bred these puppies in his dams so he know a thing or two about em.

the good news:- he says they will breed in tanks/ponds no prob and are pretty hardy little buggers.

the not so fabulous news:- like the yabs- they tend to hibernate, be a bit harder to find in the colder months- Rob reckons any month with an 'R' in it is good ( a la the old wives tales re: crabbing season)

still---for the impatient such as we, i am still going to be hassling everyone and anyone i know who heads out that way to try and throw a few traps in and see if they just cant bring me back a few...they'll still be there, but just not like in the warmer months when there are millions of hungry blighters ( i remember em nibbling my legs when swimming in the Mac river-- quite disconcerting feeling )

my uncle in law goes shootin out west a few times a year, so i might be able to press him if hes goin b4 me

otherwise, i will be heading out early sept myself and takin the kids to the zoo out there, and will def be finding some 'daddy' time to go a huntin.

just like the shampoo commercial 'it may not happen overnight, but it will happen'

don't worry about things like fuel etc, as i'll be goin out anyway.
i will just be happy to share if and when the time comes if you organise your own freight etc as discussed :-D- and maybe talk RUpe into helpin us out with some O2 so they have a chance to survive the trip.

if they work in AP could be a real boon to all of us, particularly in the area of fish feeding etc.

in case you are interested, i'll put Robs website in here for ya, his new book on NSW spinies
www.aabio.com.au

looks tops, and i'll be gettin a copy real soon ( once i spend some $ on my first AP setup hehehe).
i have his yabby farmers handbook and it's truly excellent.

cheers
D

not worried about the hibernating Dagz as long as they breed and taste alright  I doubt they will livve in tank with yabbies so yabbies will have to be disposed of, one by one in vinegar  but keep in touch either here or PM and I will see what other info I can find

They actually live in the Macquarie with Yabs, silver and golden perch + Murray cod!

now while you cant keep all in an Ap tank without mass fatalities...reasonable sure the shrimp and yabs will co-exist ok as Rob had em together in his yabby ponds no prob :-D

UMMMM are we still talking about Macro- rosenbergi? Breeding is reasonably simple ,, access to a good supply of fresh sea water is essential , plus the knowledge to grow monia ,, etc. Typically 20% egg, larvae survival rates are considered good.

Guess its a bit hard to know if we are talking M. Rosenbergii or M. Australiense
it is probably more likely to be the later in the south. They don't need the esturine development that M Rosenbergii do (in fact they are intolerant of salt water) so they may breed in a freshwater system with suitable conditions. They are nest builders in the wild so would need pairs with suitable habitat to do it without intervention.

I think you can tell them apart fairly well by the colour - if they have none they are likely to be M. Australiense. It's also called the long armed prawn so that is probably a clue.

for me ,, giant fresh-water prawn ,, long armed prawn and Cherabin have always meant the rosebergii...
I guess because i have eaten several hundred kilo over my travels in SE Asia.
I've visited more than several commercial rosenbergii farms ,, cannot say i have ever heard of an Australiansi one?

So with a supply of sea/possibly brackash water? and a few gallon jars of rotofers and a few fish aquariums a person can raise larval shrimp?
