During the worst of the water crisis my old man made a water tank out of sheet metal which he reinforced. My mum hated the sight of it and has since purchased a proper water tank which mean the old 1000 litre home made job is sitting there basically unused. Just wondering if this wold be a suitable tank for my first set up. Also as the old man is a sheet metal worker by profession he has access to stainless steel sheeting - would stainless steel be appropriate for grow beds? Any advise would be welcomed.

stainless steel in my opinion is the ultimate material for tanks and grow beds,,, the only question is the welding ,,what materials etc are involved in the welds? I am planning SS beds ,, just flat sheeets but allowed to bend into half pipes,,, the end peices are the only worry.

Always thought it should have been called stain and pitting resistant steel (dosn't sound as good though).

Cons
Pig to cut holes in
Transmits heat and cold

And you need to know what "stainless" it is.

Yeah it was mainly the thought of the stainless steel bearing the brunt of the qld summer sun that had me thinking I might end up with water that is too hot... Does anyone run stainless grow beds????

I think that stainless steel sheet that has to cost someone, will be far more expensive than a BYAP grow bed. Stainless should reflect heat more than a plastic GB

Thats less than standard steel. Not a cheaper grade. I've only purchased food grade SS sheeting. 16gauge.

I ordered zinc sheets for a fence and it was $14 per mtr x .76 wide. Think I'm going to install a SS fence instead.
