I know people have mentioned making fish tanks out of plywood before. I have been thinking about making one out of pure plywood.

I have been looking into quite a few LARGE aquariums made from plywood,
screws, boat glue, epoxy paint and sealed with silicon. They work and I
even talked with someone who has been using one for over eight years now.

Construction:
1) Plywood connected with 3" screws spaced no more that 3" apart (pre-drill
holes to keep plywood from splitting).

2) Connections glued with wood glue for boats.

3) The inside is sealed with epoxy paint (Outside not seal to keep moisture
from getting trapped inside and causing wood to rot).

4) Seal all inside joints with silicon.

5) Have cross braces to keep the sides from bowing out.

On the aquariums, they obviously have glass fronts and sides. I guess you
could have glass observation ports on your fish tank if you want. Just do a
google image search for "plywood aquarium" and you will see how many are
working and holding water and fish.

Thanks for sharing! That looks pretty cool and really BIG!
Large Aquariums get really expensive quick as they go up in size!

Interesting. And very tempting: just some sliding glass door panes, ply, etc and you are in business.... Being able to see the fish really makes it easier to check health, feed to satiation but not beyond, etc.

What about making a take the size of a sheet of plywood and making it 4' deep?
That would be 1,915 gallons, or 7,249 liters completely full!
I would think that you would want to line something that big with a pond liner for safety...

Now this is a big indoor tank! Not nearly as attractive as the plywood ones though.

I once had a plywood tank in my greenhouse. It was double walled with 2x4 studs for strength. It was roughly 10' long, 3' high, 3' wide. There was so much pressure against the sides I had to add steel bars across the top and the sides continued to bow. Water likes to be round, not square. ;-)

Man! That just looks cook!
If I had plenty of money, I could just buy fiberglass tanks, but I don't want to try to build something that won't work....
