I would not lower your pH until after you get the grow bed lined! The more acid the water the quicker zinc and copper become toxic. (Even people can become sick from zinc overdose if they drink apple cider that was processed in galvanized tubs.)

pH. What kind of rock is that pea gravel? If it is limestone, that will be what is causing your 8+ pH. Adding acid will not bring down your pH effectively if your media is buffering it up that high, you will only succeed in dissolving some of your media.

The pea gravel is really previlant through the Perth Hills area, although im not sure of the exact make up it is more iron based as i understand it, Is definitley not Limestone. I have always shyed away from putting to much shell grit or a block of limestone in as a buffer as ive alway been trying to lower the PH.

He lives in Gidge and im in Glen Forrest. so its proabably 15km away...
I will measure the PH soon and then maybe add a little acid, to get it under 8....

I cannot stress enough that you must line the zinc immediately.

There are so many cases of 100% fish deaths due to unlined galvanising.

I decided to remove my fish, put them in a pond i have with Koi, so i can drain my tank and make sure the water is clear of the zinc/galv.
I had a suprise though i had some gold fish and koi in there originally (9 months ago) i thought they had all died as i lost all my original perch. And i hadn't seen any trace of them for at least 6 month.... Anyway they were all in there, they are huge......
But out of my 100 fingerlings i have 20 left, hopefully they will last in the pond.

i was trying to work out why the Ph was high, and i did have some red gum leaves fall in which i did stop but maybe the residual breakdown of the leaves was causing the high PH. I will get the system up with the new water and take some PH measurements. hopefully i will be in the right range this time....

Thanks for everyones input.....
