Stu I am interested in as to why SA don't have trout in AP, reading some info from SA Fisheries it say's because of climate and water quality, I would assume your climate is similar to ours, although you got hammered this summer, water quality? Perth water tastes like sand mixed with chlorine n a good day (Fortunately I live 200 k's from Perth  ) Perth people will disagree but then their use to it, so then I searched for regulations and found these
some SA Govt Body wrote:
A number of government agencies have regulations that relate directly to land based
aquaculture operations in South Australia.
Primary Industries and Resources SA (Fisheries) has responsibility for all fish in waterways of
the state and the administration of all regulations relating to preventing the escape of animals
and the associated risk of introducing diseases into natural populations. The transfer of live
animals from one waterway to another without a permit is forbidden. Fish farmers must ensure
that animals cannot escape from their farm into natural waterways. Animals exotic to South
Australia, like barramundi, can only be farmed after receiving a permit from the Director of
Fisheries. Live fish can only be bought into South Australia if they have been certified free of
disease. It is illegal to sell fish in South Australia unless you are a professional fisherman or a registered fish farmer. Registration forms are available from Primary and Industries and
Resources SA (Fisheries) by request on (08) 8226 2312.
The Water Resources Group of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has
responsibility for the quality of water in natural water bodies within the State. This department
also controls access to and use of underground waters. In many regions access to this
resource is limited.
Some local councils have placed limits on aquaculture developments within their district. This is
certainly the situation in the Mt Lofty Ranges area. Development approval from the council is
required for construction of buildings, undertaking activities such as processing and for change
of land use.

So from what I read it isn't illegal to grow trout in AP unless you live in MT Lofty Ranges area, so what is the problem, I missed something somewhere so can you fill in the blanks, or anyone else from SA.
On reading the same paper (above) it also has laws from other states, it appears the way I read it, we in WA can only grow trout and barra legally, so we should set up on the border and confuse the *frack* out of both bodies

Im sure Monya will add to this but bacically it is a licencing issue. If you have an aquaculture licence, then you can only have the species registered with PIRSA in the aquaculture licence on the licence site. To get a species on the list it is alot of cost and work.
As opposed to the general public who can have any (non-restricted, eg not tilapia as they are a restricted species, etc for SA) species they want as long as they are not selling or trading them.

i hope that sort of makes sense ....

as Dan said, the rules and regs make small scale production of them here unviable... the health testing costs, licensing bullshit, council would need to approve it plus the epa and Pirsa... too hard basket.
if you are average joe, you can do what you want except sell them.. and everh dam around here has trout AFAIK

Have no idea what the last word means, so an average aper can have trout in SA, but they are hard to buy? I notice one farm in Tooperang (Hope that's right it's a few EB's down the track :drunken: ) sells trout, are they then expensive? as i said before people say WA is behind  but no doubt their would be some sort of restrictions in WA........Maybe, Troutman :?:

Similar process here Nocky to get a Aquaculture licence.
Council approval first and then depending on size of operation the Dept of water, EPA etc etc all have to have their say before fisheries will look at it. Usually takes at least a year until you know whether you have been successful or not. There are also minimum water surface areas you must have for some species and in some catchments you cant farm certain species.

Many farms apply for multiple species bundled licenses when they first apply... even if they don't farm, or even intend to farm a particular species when first starting up...

This is because the "application" and processing fees are large... whereas the individual species licenses are relatively cheap... to license a species later involves a seperate application and fee...

Cheaper to do it at the start....

Yeah spot on Rup.
I am licenced for Trout Silver Perch and Barramundi though I have never had a Barra on the property and dont know if I ever will. I just didnt want to go thru the whole laborious process and pay extra fees again if I did decide to farm them. Murray Cod are the exception over here in that it is extremely difficult to get a licence for them.
