We have started cutting off hands of bananas and ripening them in a bag with ripe bananas. I think it is getting too cold for them to ripen naturally. I think I have finally cycled
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
:compress:
I'm looking forward to seeing the plants take off. I am trying to feed them caterpillars but they don't tend to want to eat them. Thanks for everyones help with cycling. I can't believe it cycled without loosing a fish :P

oops  I just read my last post. That will teach me for typing with a baby on my lap. I have increased the fish food to 2 Tablespoons a day. Today my nitrite levels have increased to .25. I will continue to monitor it and may cut back on feed.

I had a bit of an ammonia spike. I reduced the food and went away for the weekend.... Hopefully everything will be back on track tomorrow.

Everything is going well. My plants have finally taken off. The silverbeet and chinese cabbage are loving the aquaponics. I am not having much success with the lettuce. It seemed to rot and die. I only have one iceburg left (from a full punnet of seedlings).

The trout are slowly growing. I don't think I am feeding them enough. I have increased the feed to 3 heaped Tablespoons a day. I am going to slowly increase it. Everytime I increase the feed I seem to get an ammonia spike. I guess that is to be expected.

How slowly should I be increasing the food for the trout? Should I increase it by a Tablespoon every so many days???
I am going to try and grow lettuce in floating rafts on top of the fish tank. I am hoping by removing the fish tank cover I wont get an algae problem. I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow.

Do you have any idea of the average weight of a fish?

Could be feeding about 2% of body weight per day.

I weighed two fish yesterday. 23 and 22grams respectively.

From memory, in another thread... Troutman recommended feeding at 1% of body weight...

So multiply your number of fish by 23gms... and then take 1% of that total...

This will give you your daily feed ration...

I have worked out that I am grossly underfeeding the trout. My question is 'How quickly do I increase the feed levels?'
Here are some pictures of the growth of the plants and our first feed of yabbies.
