Anyway, I think I will be going down the path of the BYAP kits. I am re-routing some reticulations in the backyard to allow for the kits. Does anyone know the approx. dimensions of the 1000L tank from the BYAP kit?

The BYAP 1000L tanks have a diameter of approx 1680mm and a height of approx 635mm.

Very good Gavin, I would say 1.7 metre diameter for the 1000 litre tank.

Thanks for your reply. I measured up the allocated area. I think it will just fit.

Just reading the different posts, is it true that it is good to slightly bury the tank??
Can someone explain the reason why?

Not really necessary with this design of system Ivan.. Some people do it because they believe that it helps to keep the tempertature more stable but as the water is pumped through the growbed others will tell you it makes no difference.

but I think it makes a diff, not sure though, on the 1kl system.

I find after doing a lot of tests its hard to change temps without putting a lot of effort and money into the system
and you know the saying kiss [keep it simple stupid]

I have been in a tank that is in the ground and an adjacent one at ground level.
The inground tanks was definatly cooler.
Same location etc.

Yep inground deffinatley cooler but as soon as you add air or pump the water through grow beds it all changes
evern at the silver perch farm tanks that have a inbuilt filter and pump are hotter than the others

I got into more than a few ,,,AHHHHH ,, enthusiastic discussions:) last time i mentioned I wanted to heat my tank.
I haven't given up on the idea ,, but i have given up arguing the point.
All i can say is insulate/insulate/insulate ..... find a way to keep the beds warm and ensure any air being pumped in is also warm. ( pumping times also critical)
I have taken the time to read the experiences of others trying this ,, learned a lot from some small success's and a lot from some failures. With winter just arriving there is no better time to test theories.

As it turns out, the idea of burying the tank is a temperature related subject and it is also a possibly divided subject.
Probably boils down to personal perference then.

Is Trout a better fish to keep for winter?

By the way, reading on some other threads, it appears that there are a number of members testing their water every so often. I have a few questions. Why is testing the water quality required and/or important? Must testing be done on a regular basis or only on start-ups? What if the results are not good? What do you do?

If the test kits are required even for beginners, can someone recommend a relatively good and economical test kit to purchase?

Sinking a tank into the ground can have an impact on temperature (probably only worth doing if your desired water temperature is close to your normal ground temperature.) That said, Flood and drain grow beds have a far bigger impact on water temperature since during the coldest time of the night during winter, they can act as chillers (and darn effective ones) and during the hottest time of day in summer they are very effective water heaters. Probably only worth digging your tank into the ground if your ground is easy to dig and you want to. Or if you might later turn this tank into a sump tank and expand the system big time in the future.
