Looks like a lot of members are stocking up on Trout for winter!

I’m keen to know what your planned stocking density is going to be and how long you will be keeping them for or what size you plan to grow them out to?

The reason I ask is that I’ve finally got confirmation from the IFS as to what my stocking qty’s can be. (A huge thanks to Troutman and another fellow Tasmanian AP’er for the help)

The Exemption Permit will allow/limit us Tasmanians to;
∙ Only stocking Trout.
∙ Stock a maximum of 150 Trout at any one time.
∙ A maximum of 50 fingerlings per stocking event.
∙ Up to six stocking events during the life of 3 year permit.

Depending on my preferred stocking density, the permit has defined the size of my fish tank(s) for me. Which then leads to the amount of grow beds or bio-filtration that I use (once again depending on my preferred FT to GB ratio)

All that's left to work out is the layout!

I'm actually pleased that the permit has placed some limits on me, from a design perspective it's helped in defining the overall size of my system.

PS; I realise that I can stock as many gold fish as I want so by rights I could go nuts, but just for now let’s assume I can’t have gold fish either.

Cheers Jamie

Strange that there are such restrictions on trout in Tassie where you can ctach traout pretty much everywhere. Is it to protect the aquaculture industry or are they basing it on environmental concerns.

We have 100 trout in a 5000 litre system. All put in as one stocking event at around 50 grams. It is hoped that we can grow them out to around 800 grams before the water gets to warm in November. Our stocking rate seems quite low to what others have but in a school environment we chose to go with a low rate that will hopefully make it easier to manage without daily monitoring.

Cheers,
Mike

I have 5 (2 square metre) growbeds and have stocked 100 @ 50 gram trout, which will fertilise my plants over the next 6 months and I may impress my friends with a smoked trout or two along the way. I expect them to get around 500 grams, they don't get much attention these days at home but I still get heaps of veges from the system and thats what I want.
Very little maintenance, healthy produce and outside my back door.
I have a 3000 litre main fish tank and 2 drain/ fingerling tanks about 500 litres each.
Works well for me
Faye
Taz I am sure that you will have a lot of fun. :)

I have 4 mature BYAP GB's 3000l FT & 1000l sump,
and 150 x 50 gram monster trout  :flower:

We will start to eat the bolters in a couple of months, reducing fishload by culling @ around 385grams.
I don't expect a result like last year  that was awesome 8)
...but a Kg would be good

Huh that is an oxymoron Ivan. You'll be giving people the wrong idea. They are just babies but we know you can manage that many in the system cause you've got xperience in aquaponics.

50 Trout per 1000 litres of water (ibc's), about 200 Trout left here, with 250 or so Perch / Bream. Total of 10,000 litres of water feeding 6500 litres of growbed.

I'd feel very comforatle with 150 x 1kg trout in 3000 litres of water. This is a pretty safe level, with good backup air.

So you'd want at least 1500 litres of growbeds.

Unless disaster strikes, I'll have 1kg Trout by November.

Pretty funny with the restrictions, wonder what the fine is for stocking 400 Trout :D

Around 250 gramm per day on average, I only feed until they stop splashing. Had some water quality / tank cleanliness issues until yesterday when I put a 200w pump in.....what should 200 ish Trout be getting?

Terrified of overfeeding and leaving food on the bottom of the tanks.

Troutman recommends 1% of body mass per day so 200 trout at around 75 grams would be 150 grams per day. Haven't weighed ours lately but am currently working on 75 grams, would like to weigh a few but I need some electronic scales. Do you think 75grams is about what yours are at? You have been feeding higher than me so would be interesting to see what the difference between ours is.

 I know ours look like they have grown a lot but I guess I really have no idea, maybe they are more than 75 grams, will try and measure with kitchen scales tomorrow.

Yeah, bit surprised myself... normally most fingerlings are feed about 5% of body weight... spread over 4-6 feeds a day...

1% is usually the feed rate for mature stock near harvest...

I know zilch about Trout but everything i know about fish in general tells me 1% must be a mistake.
Anyway , I won't need that info until next year:)
