take a look at this site the pondmate pumps move a fair bit of water for the amps used. http://www.creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/ ... _pumps.htm i have been using the pondmate 18000 lt per hr and it has performed admirably over a period of 9 months. I is easy to clean. Im going to buy the 22000 lt model as i am currently upgrading my system.

Lot of watts to pump a 4mtr head... I think someone else used one a while back, not sure how it went though...

Ebara "One" (formerly "Best Zero")
Bought Sep 2008, Run capacitor fail November 2009.
FYI:-
Buy an 8uF 400V capacitor (or two!) TODAY for spares.

If the shaft turns after the pump fails, the fault is probably electrical so don't remove the four cover screws at the mechanical end of the pump, it is not necessary to access the electrics and will leak the oil from this end section. If you do end up letting the oil out, simply assemble (once cleaned), invert the pump, and the indentations around the cover are just the right size to fill with the correct amount of oil - you may need to push some clean wire through the hole to get the oil in.

Do not fret if you remove the screw (the one with the 'O' ring) from the electrical end and you hear a "pffft" of air come out. The whole end cap is a friction fit over the pump body and when you put it back together (with that screw in!) the section will pressurise as the end cap is slid further down the pump body.

P.S. It was a Public Holiday in ACT yesterday, so I had to get a spare pronto - no 8uF available, the pump is running OK on a 10uF unit.

Had the same problem with the same pump Yarra.... quick cheap fix.... and the pump has been running fine since.

P.S ... where did you get the capacitors from?

What are people using to support there bigger pumps to prevent twisting of the pipes during start up, have purchased a large pump but the torque on start up is pretty significant. Hence I have not mounted it in yet

hi, fist post yipee...

umm... just thought about getting a pump for pumping the water from the pond into the bio-filter which im about to build.

had a read of some posts already but i have 2 questions:

1. what store would have the cheapest/most variety pumps? bunnings? or some fish/aquarium shop?
2. what sort of head do i need if it has to pump water from the bottom of the pond which is about 2 meters? and are they costly to run continously?

just doing some initial research for converting the unused pool into a koi pond. so any info will be greatly appreciated.

cheers

edit. the pool is about 30-40 cubic meters. so thats about lets say 40 000 litres, 5% of that is 2000L so what sort of flow rate do i need? thx

Best option for that would be a couple of 12,000lph pumps running in unison. There are some links in this thread for pump selling websites. When you find a pump you like the look of, post it up here and we'll tell you yay or nay :)

Hi illuzn88,

You'll need to know your desired pumping height (head) as well. When we say a 12,000L/hr pump, thats at 0m head, but at 3m head it may only pump 6,000L/hr for example. A pumps maximum head height is the height at which water ceases to flow.

Head height is from the surface of the pond (not the bottom) to the height at which point the water exits your pipework, but any form of resistance effectively increases your head and reduces flow, so things like bends and pipe reductions should be factored in as well.

Have found my Sun Sun HQB 3900 to be leaking electricity into my system to the extend that I was receiving shocks when touching the grow-beds and earthing myself by brushing against my shed wall. I could not say how long this has been the case, but can say that I have had electricity leakage in the system (as demonstrated by some tingling in finger tips if I'd been biting nails etc) for as long as I can remember (quite possibly always attributed to this pump as it is one I have run for as long as I can remember).

To be balanced I must say that in all other respects this pump has served me well. Great flow, has lasted for years and was very cheap (probably about $60).

Needless to say it is now out of my system.

Ok guys, is there a better pump than this at 2m head?

http://www.creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/pondmate/pondmate_dwp/vortex_pumps.htm

The 18000 model.

I need more flow....but do not want to waste power.
