Wow hope Monya doesn't get in this thread but went to a clients farm and discovered he grows trout, about 7000 per year but has been up to 20,000, and when son comes back he hopes to get back to 20,000, sorry Troutman he is much closer and also keeps me in work he mainly grows them to full size and sells them to fish suppliers and restaurants in Perth, have a few crap pic's from my crap work TELSTRA mobile phone, before we went out I asked him about the water supply and he said plenty, as you can see in pic's he is correct, but in the last pic you can see one of our crew with a red 10lt bucket, this is what we used to fill 500lts of containers on back of my ute
In all he has 4 dams, the one we are bucketing out of has bigger pontoons covered with more fish in for the fish markets, the middle pic is of another dam with smaller pontoons for with fingerlings for people like us, I think he looked after us a bit as we have several big trout in our stock, the top pic is of the pontoon with our fish in, he drags them up with the ute and then scoop them out with a net
Farmer has problems with Shags stealing trout (this is in the middle of nowhere 200km's from coast) and he originally counted 255 for us, only 210 when we collected, he reckons it's nothing for shags to eat so many

Good use of the work ute

There are plenty of Trout Farms out in the Wheat Belt these days. Lets the farmer make use of all the salt water they have. I take it being at Dumbleyung his water is pretty saline. Here's a link to some of the others: http://www.saltwatertrout.com.au/
Nocky, they recon shags eat their own body weight in fish each day, I have seen them swallow fish of 1kg in one gulp!!

yep, I know a bloke who found a full plate size catfish in the guts of one. they are evil.

Thanks for the edit Monya (for the record the original thread title was TROUT farm at LD ) , but this guy did say shags do eat there own body weight, TM the water was salty but drinkable, farmer said the slight salt water adds to the taste, me never eating a trout won't know the difference but will compare next time I'm out

Are there any farms in SA that stock "fish that grow well in cold weather"???? ...

there is one main one, but they are shut for the month of May, so if any Adelaidians are gonna still get these fast growing winter fish, wait until the first week in June. They will be 6 inches and 80 cents each.

Is it these guys nocky?
