This may be helpful if anyone is considering using hydrogen peroxide in aquaponic systems.

If it kills algae I would worry about its effect on the bacteria in the gravel and filter systems when used in aquariums ponds and AP.

Peroxide is wonderful for plants. There are several groups that use it (often in combination with sugar water) as a foliar feed. The problem is that it's very strong against bacteria and viruses. In strong concentrations, it will burn the fishes' gills.
There are places that I would suggest it having a great place in AP:
fish dip (to kill off parasites, bacteria, and treat wounds)
Cleaning produce before eating
Sterilizing a system (after a major disease)

The places you don't want it are:
in your bacteria bed (it will wipe them out)
in high concentrations - anywhere

If you use it as a fish dip, you need to make sure that it is at under 1% for a brief dip, and probably less than .01% for a hospital tank.

0.01% will still wipe out bacteria?

I tried this after reading an article on fishkeeping and controlling algea with it. It does work. As far as conversion of nitrite to nitrates... I did not see any with my tests. The amount that I dosed was very low it was something like 20ml to 10 gallons. I don't remember the exact ratio will have to see if I can find the article. I was losing fish at the time and had lots of algea growth.

It killed my apogenton plant that I had as well as the algae. It did not kill the plant right away, but it died a few days later. While I can't be certain that this is what killed it, this was the only change that I know of.

After dosing I saw a rise in ammonia from 0 to 0.5 and nitrite from 0 to 1.0 that took 2 days to go back to zero. This was in my first indoor test system. The plants that were planted in the growbeds actually did better though.

Oh, and I stopped losing fish after that.

Found the link.

Again if anyone is thinking about trying this based on my post, I want to emphasize it was more dilute than what was listed in this article, and I do not remember the exact ratio I used( this was almost a year ago). I believe I went with 1/2 his dosage which would be 15 ml of 3% peroxide to 10 gallons of water.

One note most off the shelf 3% peroxide contains heavy metals and stabilizers. Its not fit to drink.. Get food grade from a health food store!

an ammonia spike and nitrite spike would suggest that even at such a low dosage, the bacteria was most displeased with the introduction :-(
