I understand that flowers, on average, are blooming earlier by a few days to weeks. And why not have the worst of both worlds: if melting ice causes the global conveyer to shut down we get a frozen, starving Europe *and* the rest of us drying/overheating/flooding. Yipee!

Frankly, I don't think we have the collective brains as a species to avoid it any more than yeast can stop their breeding before poisoning themselves, but I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Trees are growing at higher latitudes on the globe but is it from Co2 or greater amounts of the suns radiation? Ask around and you will find answers that will collaborate either side that is heavily seasoned with opinion. Try to find some raw data that isn't relative to something else. Just pure quantitive numbers. For years I had to watch the news on 3 different channels to try to separate opinion and spin to get to the truth. If you watched only one channel would always agree with the editorialist. But if you watched all three skeptically, different facts would emerge in each that wouldn't make much difference in the one editorial but if the facts were taken together the opinions would often be in direct conflict with the facts. The globe cooled over the last 9 years so that shouldn't be the answer to why this is happening but maybe. But certainly this fact taken with other conflicting facts should raise both doubt and curiosity and a genuine longing for the truth. Every time I think about the volcano in the Philippine islands that erupted in the early 80's that spewed out more C02 than mankind has made since the beginning of time I can't help but think that it's plain vanity to think we are responsible for warming the globe. The globe is warming, based on a few hundred year average, the numbers prove it out. I do believe we can and are poisoning it for our selves and our fellow inhabitants. So if global warming is the reason to stop polluting I guess it can be as good as any I've heard. There are big big problems in the world and we are wasting a lot of effort to stop something bigger than a collective man kind can solve, any more than slowing the rotation of the earth down to have a longer day and a longer nights rest. We could be doing more to sustain ably, feed the hungry, cure the sick, reestablish forests and ecosystems and do it in an organized methodical manor. Anyway I do love my Planet Earth video collection and I'm sure it was inspired mostly by the global warming opinions of today, And really would like to see some unbiased research, but seriouslly who would fund it?

Regardless BRB.... and regardless of whether or not we can directly affect Ghia's balancing of natural environments... within a human timeframe...

The root cause is pollution...and consumption... both are totally unsustainable...

Consumption is a mindset that may take decades to change.... pollution, IMO... we could change in a decade.....

Pollution is a mindset of industrialised business... a cheap, gutless disregard.... with appropriate will, and huge fines.... we could alter this mindset rapidly.... or force the useless greedy bastards out of existence...

Fine them 10% of their asset value for any blatant breach I say... and don't issue "pollution licencses"....

Business has had 3 decades in which to address the problem... the awareness and science has been around for at least that long... as have the industrial/technological solutions...

Businesses response initially was positive... with a change in political leaning of the last two decades... business response has been to transfer operations to countries where they can buy their right to pollute....

Ummm...the info I've found says that while the last couple years were a bit cooler, something like 7 of the hottest years in history were in the last ten years. And Pinatubo put out something like 42Mtons to 350Mtons during it's eruption, compared to 70Mtons per day, 25billion tons per year for humans. There are some widely and happily quoted errors out there that do not help with an accurate debate. Too bad we don't have folks who both sides see as honestly vetting information rather than having trusted folks (on either side) who are happy to use errors, exaggerations, or lies to advance their arguments.

If you read my posts again you will see that I do not dispute that we have climate change. I dispute that it will just get hotter and hotter with no natural swing back to cooler. Go back in time and look at what the newspapers were saying back 30 years and longer. I see the latest trend in the climate debate as merely a micro-scopic view that seems to ignore too many other facts and repeatedly seems to have a politico-financial agenda. I am also questioning all the money spent on something that will adjust naturally when we have such desperate needs ............midst the poor for example.

We have climate changes for sure. In some places warmer and in others not. My Dad lives in the UK and complained of really cold weather last year. The real question is.... have we humans stressed the balance so far... that the righting of the balance will occur as relatively rapidly as it once might have....

And if we continue to pollute... will we stall the counter-balance affect to the detrement of both our and other species existence...

This is the worry that many scientists are actually expousing... not that a natural righting of the system may not occur.... but has our interference stressed the mechanisms beyond the point of historical interaction....

IMHO, there are a few things that should be focused on rather than global warming, which I personally a little sceptic about. For example, I have a friend who is a fruit blocker in the riverland. He is watching his mates drop dead around him, and is suffering himself, from resiratory cancers caused by years of exposure to unsafe levels of sprays etc, not to mention they drink rainwater which is caught from the roofs of their houses that catch the soray drift... now that is unsustainable farming... it is killing it's farmers... no balance there, no natural predators of bugs etc, because of blanket spraying etc...
I would also love to have a look if there is a link between motor vehicle caused and coal fired power station caused pollution and cancers... ya can't see it when you are in it, but there is a layer over the city which I can see that is brown, and I am so thankful I ain't breathing that air anymore. So although I am not to stressed about global warming, I am very stressed about pollution, and the 2 go hand in hand... if you believe the people who say that we are warming becasue of polution, which is linked to consumption anyway, then reduce polution can only have positive effects on the health of the population and perhaps even the environment

You bring up a valid about consumption/pollution. But take it one step further. From industrial consumption we get the pollution that is killing your friends, in the products that we make. From the chemicals in the roof the rainwater runs off from, to the chemicals in the air from car exhaust, manufacturing, burning of wastes.

Our vision has become skewed. Our consuming ways are killing us.

The balance we seek in nature may not include us if we keep mucking things up. But then, we're just one crisis away from being self-sustaining anyway whether we like it or not, so, what the hey.

We can't be self sustaining as individuals- we have to be self sustaining at least at a local level, a small community size. Otherwise, those with less, will just take what you have. Starving people don't ask politely and this will cause wars in the end.

There is one other thing that I haven't mentioned here- global dimming. Because of the massive amounts of pollution in the air, we actually have a lot less sun light hitting the earth than normal. You'll see the true affects of global warming when they start to clean the air....

My understanding was that the inversion layer created by carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gas pollutants, thus trapping the heat in the earth's atmosphere.... was largely responsible for warming...

Clear, clean air... IMO... is the solution to the problem...

BRB......did you read about Krakataua - the volcano in Sunda Straihgt between Sumatra and Java?
it erupted in August 1883......the volcanic dust that was pumped into the atmosphere circled the part of the northern and southern sky for .....years, causing blood red sunsets etc.

The article suggests that the rate of evaporation has lessened... seemingly paradoxically ad the climate has warmed... and (quite correctly IMO)... suggest this is a result of less sunshine... "global dimming".... which they concede is directly related to the increased thickened layer of pollution in the atmosphere ... blocking the sun...

Exactly what I said....

The evaporative effect.... compounds the problem... as rainfall formation is directly related to the uplift of evaporative water from oceans, land, and transpiration from plants & trees....

More pollution... Less sunlight... Less moisture uplift (pan evaporation).... less cloud formation... less rain... less vegetation... less transpiration... less rain... global warming....

Just another validation of the urgent need to stop polluting our atmosphere... clean skies, clean air... a natural system...
