ok, thanks, is that all that is edible? what about the stems, looks like there ought to be a bunch of food there.

Mine are starting off of runners... I don't see much in the form of these 'corms'

yeah, people eat the corms, stems, and i've heard of leaves also. i've only seen the corms at the local stores.

don't know why you haven't seen the corms forming, either it's not taro or it hasn't gotten big enough?

I think you would be surprised. of course who knows what they have been through before they get to your store.

I am curious though. If anyone knows.... what part of the plant do you eat? I have read how to prepare them, and mine have just gone crazy in AP. They were minitures, up until I tried to put them in the AP system. Then... well...., they really grew. They never got over 15 inches before, now they are nearing 5 feet and the ears are every bit of 30 inches. I now have LOTS of them. they have sent out runners everywhere and the one I had is now about 50. I would like to eat them if they are etable if any one can direct me to what part of the plant to cook up.

Thanks,
Mathew

Here they do get really big. It just depends on the variety. I've seen 7' tall plants before.
Also, I've never heard of runners from taro before so I'd make sure that what you have is taro. It could be poisonous otherwise.
Like the other poster said the tubers, corms, and leaves are all edible. In hawaii the large tubers are harvested by cutting the top off so that your tuber looks like the pictures posted (keep a 1" section of the tuber attached to the stems). Then you just plant the stem right back into the ground for another harvest. Also, the small corms growing off the sides can be cut off and planted separately for a whole new plant.
The leaves are very good to eat. Just steam and they're ready. Here we make stews out of them with squid or chicken. You can also wrap different foods (pork, beef, fish) in the leaves then wrap them in aluminum foil or ti leaf leaves (if you got them) and steam it all to make laulau (my favorite food).

Just remember, don't eat the corm raw, it'll make your mouth and throat itchy and I think it'll give your toilet a workout.

If your "taro" plant is huge, it's not taro. There's a species of plant that looks exactly like taro but it's giant (forgot the name of the faux taro). Our professor showed it to us in college and I thought it looked neat because it's like Jurassic Park with all the huge plants.
