laptops work well when you always seem to need them away from home :)
they are just not as flexible when upgrading components

Upgrading is commonly incorrectly thought of as being economical.

If you build a pc yourself, and know it well, and it's generic not brandname, then it is possible to upgrade, somewhat.
If you buy a PC off the shelf, you're getting ripped off when they offer to 'Upgrade' it for you.

And generally when you build your own generic computers, you tend to just put together a whole new one rather than upgrade the old one..... :)

If funds allow... often you keep the case, RAM and HDD, drives and peripherals, depending on how old or recently replaced they are.
