Galvanized fish tanks should probably be lined before you get any costly fish again.

Go see Milne's setup, it's VERY educational, and worth the drive, well for us in the North it's not far anyhow ;-)

I'm reasonably certain Monya is most interested as to whether your new Trout arrived in a nice insulated trout safe box for carrying the trout that you bought at the trout farm...

Released into our pond around 1.00pm - they told us they would be fine for 3 hrs, but were gasping in the bag when we took the bag out of the esky with blanket over.

In the first post they mention they were bagged with O2 and there it is esky with blanket over.

Yes I have had a couple of people say this to me now...

Thinking that water in gal tanks was quite safe to drink, I hadn't allowed for the pH changes that may happen when fish are introduced...and then subsequent leaching.

Interestingly, the water (worked v late yesterday so no time to drain tank even though no fish now) is very cloudy, but with a kind of a metallic cloudiness if you know what I mean. Could zinc or other metals leach in 1-2 days after 20 or less fish in there for max of 15 hrs?
I suppose we need a chemist to answer that question.

No trout left now (last 7 died over night) so will go with goldies to get the whole thing going, and also to see if there is some strange thing in the tank. If goldfish don't survive, then there is something odd.
Will only put trout in again when things seem stable, just to be sure.

thats what we said lol....cycle first....too much too soon...just ask KP....baby steps :)

Hi all (including Stu) we have been on a visit to F&F - very elucidating (did you like that word?) ie It has made everything clear...
Well, seeing such a well-laid out system (with a gracious host) certainly helps to get the hang of things.

Things learnt in the last week:

1. Seal gal tanks for fish keeping
2. Start system with 1 goldfish
3. If goldfish lives for a week, add another goldfish
4. Test stuff (pH, ammonia, etc)
5. And so on, until system stabilises and water is clear.
6. Buy VERY SMALL TROUT and bring them home in a nice, cool, dark, esky.
7. Get home within a couple of hours.
8. Gradually introduce trout to your water (don't just fling them in in a panic)
9. Don't feed too much at first, but then grind your trout food up so they can get their little mouths around it
10. Cover tank with lid to help avoid algae
11. Introduce worms to clean up old plant root systems(although I read this one before, it is a great idea)
12. Most importantly, drink beer with your mates and show off really cool fish, vegies and herbs! :flower:
