I caught some fish from a lake where I've been told that Tilapia live in. I've been by another lake and the tilapia I've seen in there are a bit darken then these ones. Please tell me if the fry and the one is a tilapia. If you need a better pic please let me know. Thanky ou for your time.

About all I can say is could be. Hard to tell from the picture though and though the fry look like they could be tilapia, you would need much better pictures and an expert to say for sure I think.

To avoid confusion, it is best not to place the same question/post in different sections of the forum. The big fish looks like tilapia to me

is it possible to get a picture of the fins of the big fish? tilapia have pointy dorsal fins

Yah, it's definitely a Cichlid. Which one, I'd have trouble telling with that pic. Try for a better photo and we'll see what we can guess

I was able to take a better pic. At the same time does anyone know how long would it take to grow tilapia just off of duckweed to get 1 1/2 pounds. And what should be the ratio to the gallons of water since it takes longer than commercial feed? Thank you

If you have 85 F water, I would think you could grow tilapia out that big on duckweed in around a year provided they are not all too busy breeding. But I really don't know the answer to your question. I have 4 or 5 tilapia in a duckweed tank but they are already mostly over a year old and the temp just dropped to 56 F in the water last night.

If your temps are not perfect, you may have trouble growing tilapia out to 1 1/2 lbs on any sort of feed. My largest ones are not even 1 1/2 lbs and I've had them since last May.

Besides cold fronts, it's pretty much warm all year round here in the Bahamas. I just wanted to know how long it would take to reach adult size from duckweed. What to have my system setup where there is little brought in from the outside. I'm also trying to grow rice to feed the fish too.

I only have 1 big one like that.

Duckweed can provide as much protein as cheap fish food. Im sure you can get eating size in a year. 7+ months IF you feed them 40% protein feed until they reach 4 inches long.
