A few weeks ago, I had a few SP deaths, so I added some salt.
Since then, no more deaths , but my plants have suffered a bit.

I've always been reluctant to add salt to my system.

A few thoughts to share after purchasing a Salinity Refractometer......
-I might have got carried away with the salt, it now measures 5ppt. Sudden increase was great for the fish, but bad for the plants.
-A sample of my Adelaide water measures 1ppt out of the tap, I should have considered this when working out salt concentration.

-Most of the experienced folk here, recommend running your system at 3ppt. I ignored it :!: Probably cost me some fish

You can calibrate your Refractometer with distilled water. I run 1 to 2ppt and the plants seem okay. If yours is 5ppt just change out a little to get it back down.

Just bought a refractometer myself and waiting for delivery. I try to salt at 1ppt but who knows what it is at. I salt all water top ups and figure that as the water evaporates the salt % may be increasing with every top up. I will soon find out what it is. I think I will maintain 2ppt. For good fish and plant health a balance is needed and a refractometer is essential.

Yep, and as essential as having one is calibrating it... ours was out of whack without us realising  bloody weather here has knocked the silvers around... we lost 4 fish within a week of the 40 deg to 20 deg temp drop, now they are fine, we cut off the nft and salted to 4 parts for 2 weeks, and have slowly dropped it back now that they are fine.

Well it's that time of year again....
TROUT TIME
(sorry Monya)

However, I still have some small Barra in my system.
I couldn't bring myself to put them all in the freezer, so I bought an old 6ft tank off ebay and plan to keep them heated until the BBQ gets them.
I might even have a go at making an indoor AP system.....

Meanwhile, they live in an aquarium with heaters, DIY trickle and EHIEM canister filter.
The fish have been in there for a couple of days now. They are still a bit freaked out by the move and being looked at inside a glass tank so I thought I might give them some privacy.

Trout went in yesterday. Allot smaller and skinner than last year.
Also a touch of white spot.

geez that doesn't sound good. A couple of the people we have installed systems for have got them recently and they look fine... but a mate of mine got 300 yesterday and he said some were only 2 inches, others 4 inches... I reckon they must have sold out of the first batch of good ones or something, as the ones my clients got were nearly 6 inches and looking great. :?
