http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose%E2%80 ... condensate

meh, not that interesting................ooooh oooh, hang on...........

"When the scientists raised the magnetic field strength still further, the condensate suddenly reverted back to attraction, imploded and shrank beyond detection, and then exploded, blowing off about two-thirds of its 10,000 or so atoms. About half of the atoms in the condensate seemed to have disappeared from the experiment altogether, not being seen either in the cold remnant or the expanding gas cloud."

mmmmmmmm implosions....................:)

So... in summing up....

If you want to bury your tanks... all thats required is...

That you make Bose-Einstein condensates in your shed....

Lower the temperature to absolute zero... -273C ..... wait for the bang.....

And drop your tank in.....

P.S. Steve.... the program ran on SBS the other week.... can't remember the name ... but was an historical recount of the search for compounds and absolute zero... might be able to get a tape from them if you ask...

I've read through this amusing thread but am left with a burning question.

I have a single IBC, it's going to be almost right up against the house so it's not going to be buried (phew...really didn't want to dig that hole).

Please see below the temperature I get around here. There are minimum and maximum temperatures for the year 2007. If I looked at mean temperatures I would not be asking this question but because of the extremes it becomes an issue. I'm actually in the hinterland about 100 meters up and it's usually 1 or 2 degrees coolers at home than the coast.

The night before last our duck pond, an above ground plastic paddling pool, had 20mm of ice in it...first time I've seen that in 5 years living here.

Right now my IBC is empty but I was going to fill it this weekend. Do I want to pull it out of the cage an insulate it before filling it? It'll be in sunlight so should I paint it black to warm up faster in winter, while shading it in summer? If I put SP fingerlings in it in October will they grow out before it gets too cold if I leave the tank outside? I could conceivable move the tank into the garage and pipe the water through the wall but then they would't get any bugs and the garage gets pretty hot in the summer.
I am so confused right now.

Monkey

If you are not going to move it inside and even if you are would insulate on all sides, except the house side if outside (but make sure that side is sealed ie no air movement). Providing you don't like living in a fridge :) you have bleed from the house and a good thermal mass. You have to stop uv getting to the IBC's anyway or they go brittle. Personally I'd leave it in the cage.
Fish don't like rapid temp movements and thats hard to control in smaller water volumes.

Then you've only got to work out what to do about the GB's and the piping :)

Insulate the IBC (around the cage), and shade the growbeds in summer. But I would bury it personally :D

Painting the IBC black will cause very large temperature swings, anything it gains from being black in sunlight, it will lose overnight.

If you are in a temperate climate , growing warm water fish ,, in cooler months DO NOT bury the tank ,, insulate it well and heat it using off-peak PINK or GREEN power at night.
