on the weekend I spoke to another purveyor of aquatic plants - they said it's illegal to sell, but not a declared/noxious weed so it's legal to grow it...

Yea, if you can find a place that sells pond stuff or has ponds and fish, look around and see if there is any duck weed floating around. If you see any, try and find something to buy and ask if you can take some of the duckweed off their hands.

Goldfish do like eating duckweed as do any other fish that eat plants.

Well, it appears one bucket of water from my FT has got my duckweed going! The bath tub has gone from 20% coverage to 80% within a week.

How often do you think I'll need to add FT water?

If you harvest some.... about once a week...

Wish mine would multiply. I got a couple tablespoons worth, put some in the tank and some in another container with tank water. Neither have increased and the fish only eat it when they mistake it for the flakes.

it likes heat, shade, prefers ammonia directly over nitrate, just give it time, it will multiply.
I find my fish aren't eating it either...

My fish left it alone until they realised it was food and eat it all the time. The small goldies just ate it with there flakes.

I noticed yesterday that there is almost no duckweed left in my tank. Apparently the fish have started taking to it when I wasn't looking. Now if I could just get the duckweed in the separate container to multiply. I had a third small section of it in a 2 inch plastic cup on the windowsill and the duckweed in that has started turning white. I put in more tank water to see if it helps

due to it's preference for ammonia over nitrate, you could set up a duckweed tray, and just pee in it, it should grow fast that way. No pumps, filters fish or anything complex.

I tried that. Just be sure you have circulation otherwise it gets nasty.

I put a capfull of ammonia in it and some fresher duckweed. See how it does over the next few days/week.

No pee, only detris from the trees.

I have seen duckweed grown very well on several shallow ponds locally. Best I can tell the only thing in those ponds is rotting leaves.
