Here is another thought. Has anyone tried adding molasses

Yes, it works pretty well. I think it made the bacteria to happy at one point and they grew so fast that they used up most of the oxygen in the tank. So dont over do it! Also note that it feeds many strains.

I have put about 50mL into 600Lt just to help the bacteria colonise the GB. I don't know if this will be enough or too much. :?

Cheers,
Dennis

Things are a happinin :D
A quick update. Threw some seeds in a couple of days ago and they are starting to pop up already.
I haven't put any yabbies in yet. Just waiting for a water test kit from Jandakot, should be here this week.

Handy 2" thread in IBC lid :)

Had a major algal bloom and high pH (8) I have covered the the tank to control the algae and hope the pH will stabilise soon. The plants are looking a bit peeky but I suspect that will change when pH gets closer to neutral.

Will yabbies handle these conditions OK?
I have the opportunity to get some yabbies on Wednesday but don't want to kill them.

Cheers,
Dennis

Wack some yabbies in mate they'll produce ammonia, good for your cycling.

Thanks Guys,

We are going up to Marchagee tomorrow and going to do a raid on a mates dam. So there will be yabbies in the tank on Thursday.

Cheers,
Dennis

G'Day Gang,

15 yabbies in the tank :) Given them some carrot and lupins as well as a range of PVC pipe hidey spots.
No casualties from dam to tank (only 1hr 40min in styro box)
Have put some shade cloth around pump, hopefully won't have yabbie soup.
I guess I need to test the water to get a benchmark.
How often should I do follow up tests?

Cheers
Dennis

I would check the shadecloth a couple of times for particulate buildup. :drunken:
You have a test kit, you could record your findings if a regular check time is maintained...
pH, ammo, n'rite, n'rate and temp Ambient & water :cyclopsani: that will give you an indicator for next year

PH is a bit low as well since I did a partial water change to try and get the Ammonia level down.
Yabbies seem to be handling it ok. Water is still fairly cloudy but starting to clear slowly.

I have salvaged a couple of pumps out of dishwashers. I am going to plumb one up to see how it performs.
Interesting thing, these pumps have 2 outlets. I'm thinking to use 1 outlet to supply the grow bed and the other for tank agitation to push the sediment towards the pump inlet.
