Nope Nitrates are still at 10. What is an ideal Nitrate level?

hmmm I am confused.

My thoughts and a quick search seems to concur that Nitrates need to be above zero.

The plants dont care what the nitrate level is, as long as there is some......If you have a nitrate reading of more than 0, it means that you are creating more nutrients than your plants require. If you have a nitrate reading of 0, you are using more nutrients than you are producing. As long as you have a nitrate reading at all, it doesnt matter if its 1 or 50 - your plants are growing as fast as you will........

0+ is good. Hard to tell by the test close to the zero mark anyway. If it was 0 all the time and the plants were growing slow then its not so good. But as long as growth is good the plants are using up what the system is producing.

If you look at my mega system thread... you'll see plant growth is just fine... my readings are usually 0,0,0.... maybe 0,0,5... at best...

I'm guessing also that my system still hasn't cycled.

Surely a Nitrate level of 10 on a system about 2 weeks since fish were introduced is not a huge issue?

Absolutely no issue at all Embi....

The point being made is that... everyones system is different... and at a different stage...

Some run at a balance where the plants consume all available nitrates and growth is phenomonal... others with no nitrates may be suffering some dificiencies..

Others... at various stages... like a new system... or after a large harvest... may have nitrates that are around the 10-50 mark... some have even had nitrates to the 200 mark....

For a new cycling system... a beginning level of 10 nitrates after a couple of weeks is perfectly normal...

As the ammonia and nitrite spikes pass... it's not uncommon for nitrates to soar to 50+... until the plants start to seriously grow and consume them... a veritable explosion of growth...

I think as the plants start getting bigger that I will have the opposite issue. I have a heap of plants in the system that as they get bigger will obviously need more.

But its great that people are so keen to share info. It gets you thinking about whats going on in the system not just blindly hoping it works.

All looks good Mark!
Suddenly you'll find everything kicks on, and you have to thin out the extra stuff you put in because nothing was happening!
