Blocking is just keeping the plants in group. Corn in one part so they can help support each other as they grow.
The seedlings have to get more water roots growing and there is transplant shock. The seeds are designed to start out with a bang and get there selves growing. I don't worry about the seasons too much or the location.

No I need all the help I can get. I actually just realised that Corn planting season is not now.

I used the info found here http://www.gardenate.com/ to decide what to plant... For some reason when I was buying seed I thought corn was one of them.

I guess I'll see how it goes.

Plant in "blocks"??? Not sure what you mean.

In ap corn should be planted every 6 in [squares]

And here I thought you were going to raise fish like the rest of us. My bad, you go ahead with your system and let us know how raising Dickos turns out. :)

Well the system has been cycling for 10 days now.

We haven't added fish yet. We have been busy and werent around for Dean to drop them off last weekend.

In the mean time we have added some seasol and put in seeds and some seedling.

Quite surprised to see the seeds are going great and the seedlings are struggling. Any thoughts?

Seeds contain all nutrients required for the plants to get started while seedlings have already used up the endowment their mother gave them and are now eking out a living from nutrients in the growbed (which are often lacking at this point).

Corn is a grass, pollinated by airborne pollen rather than by insects. You are far better off with a square patch than a single long row. By planting it in a block (a rectangle of at least 4 rows or just a grid 6" (15cm) spacing) the corn is more likely to get well pollinated and give you cobs nicely filled with kernels rather than cobs with lots of kernels missing. At least this is the explanation I've heard.

hydrophilia - what they told you was the truth :cheers:

embi - cycling is the chemical balance, ammo - nitrite - nitrate.
No fish no cycling, (baring humonia) soz but you need to understand this or
you will be in for a shock (HSM :shock: ) when your fish start to poop in there.

Ammo will appear first, if you have enough good bacteria this will be converted to nitrite,
followed by nitrate, followed by continual 'cycling', this cycling is without major spikes of either.

Hope this helps 8)

Well today was a progressive day. We were in Ballarat so picked up 20 rainbow trout from the hatchery ($0.88 each) and when we got home, Dean from Growfresh Aquaponics called and said he was in the area with our test kit and shade for the tank... AWESOME so we have stocked the tank with the trout and have done some tests...so

Ph=7.8
Ammonia=0
Nitrates=0.25
Nitrites=5.0
Water Temp =20oC

Can anyone fill me in on how this is for now? Do I need to do anything at the moment...or test in a few days once the fish start doing there stuff.

Here is the latest pic...

If nothing else so far it looks the goods... Massive thanks to Dean again!

Do you have salt running in the system yet. It helps with the nitrite and general fish health.
