I don't.
I believe in fair bidding, I will place a bid at the last minute, but automated bidding is just wrong. It perverts the idea of an auction.
This is where the eBay deadline is in itself a perversion.

Grays auctions on the other hand, will extend their auctions by 5 minutes if a bid is placed in the final 5 minutes. (or some similar protocol) This is true auctions style, the goods go for what their worth, not what they're sniped at.

Goods go for what people are prepared to pay for them Kuda - whether that is via a program (which means they don't have to be at the computer) or bidding in person at the time.

Unfortunately - it would seem that in most instances, people are prepared to pay more than me

I disagree, as if I were allowed, I would outbid your snipe. This is the way an auction goes. You know: Final bid is taken, then 'Going once... Going Twice... For the third and final time...' etc
this way it is ensured that bidding is finished, and not arbitrarily cutoff, relying on fastest finger last.

Anyhow, this is an opinion, and is irrelevant to anything currently for sale on eBay, so is that far off topic, that I can't even see the road anymore.

But that's the way eBay auctions work Kuda... fastest finger last....

They expire at a certain time... the virtual hammer falls... end of auction...

What difference does it make whether you submit your bid as the hammer falls...electronically, but manually by hitting the bid button... or electronically by a timer triggered bid???

At what if you want something but can't be present at auction end....

As VB found.... if you use a "snipe" program... you must enter your "highest bid amount" when placing the snipe... and the snipe will fail if people have bid above, or essentially equal to your "high" amount...

It's the risk you take... just like a "sealed" envelope tender...

I think there's are some points that ebay might have considered...

Sometimes auctions take too long... like some people might only make the auction longer by going up by 1 cent increments or whatever so they have time to make up their minds on whether they really want the item or how much they're prepared to pay. Auctions taking too long might make some people angry. I don't think ebay could afford angry people. ;)
Also some sellers just don't have the time to stick around - ie. moving house.

In a way deadlines are a good thing coz at least buyers will know when it's going to end and this is last chance to bid whether or not they want it, rather than wasting their time watching 2 someones go up in small amounts every 5 f***king minutes.

I understand this rupe. The idea of an auction however is to raise interest and encourage bids.
The thing about auctions is that they make you want to spend more money than you originally would, because: It's only a little bit more (10 times) they also give ppl the feeling that whilst they're bidding only a little bit more, they're saving money.
Sellers should relax, and check it only every so often. If needing to move house, I see your point Jen
Every other thing I've mentioned is better for the seller though.
When I really want something I bit a stupid amount, knowing that if someone snipes me, they're more of an idiot than myself.
That said, why I don't like snipers, is that for 6 hours I'm winning this thing at $50.23 my max bid is $100 (about what it's worth) so I'm rather happy that 5 minutes remains and I'm gonna get it half price
Then some1 snipes a bid at $95, making my bid go up to $95.50
Then I come down, fast. Euphoria is crushed and I struggle to pick myself off the floor. Sure I still won it, but that B******* just made me pay double!
If he'd tried that 2 hours previous, I wouldn't have minded (as much).

Well eBay or not, the bloody tanks didn't sell this time  But they will be relisted later but in a different format [individual tanks etc.] and we will see if that does the trick.
Kuda, what is this Greys Auctions is a fee for service site as eBay is?

Yep not real solid BUT I still feel they would be a handy thing to have on hand in case of emergencies such an outbreak in the fish stocks etc.

I guess they could also be handy for those who want to have extra water on hand in times of other emergency events i.e. Bushfires, Water Restrictions [Council rebates] etc.

The fact that they flat pack is also a bonus as far as storage is concerned.

Just my thoughts is all
