Have some drums, what is the most effective, ideally easy way to cut them lengthways? Or should I just start sawing?

If its the 200lt drum you can use a wood saw, cut off wheel on an angle grinder. Table saw or a jig saw. Have a look around sometimes it works out better to cut them in half not long ways.

100mm Angle grinder with a diamond blade like you would use on tiles. These blades cost about $30 but they last forever cutting plastic. The ones with the fine serrations are the best as they will not melt pvc or even poly which a cut off wheel will. Best thing about using grinders is that you can drag the blade to clean up the edge when you are done. If you use a saw the edge is never going to be as good.

I also use poly drums cut in half lengthwise, for that, I use a sabre saw with a large toothed wood blade.
I clean up the edges with a flat bastard file. Easy and safe.

I might try using the angle grinder next time though.

Circular saw worked just fine for me cutting either way. Long ways or around the middle. I've got both styles going. (I rather like the round the middle OBO way unless I'm building a barrel ponics style frame for it.)

A hand held sabre or jig saw would work fine too.

When I built the barrel ponics system, I used a 2 2/2 inch hole saw to make the nice rounded corners of the opening of the fish tank barrel and then we used a circular saw to make the straight cuts.

A hand saw would probably work too though be a bit tedious.
