Well I read a few of the stories..and they suggested both were right.
But if I add Hydro into water the water spits
If I add water into the hydro it is dilluted from the begining.

To mix a brew for removing cement residue from stone.
I put 1 litre of acid in a watering can, then I add the water 8 litres.
If I did it the other way and I have, the acid tries to boil the water.

I guess knowing one thing and doing one thing are different

I done it your way C1....no one ws in the lab to comfirm when I was mixing the acid,,,but when I opened the hydrochloric acids...a vapour was comming off...so mixed the water into the acid

Without doubting your first hand experience, logic says otherwise.

If the acid is going to try and boil the water (agreed. it's an exothermal reaction) then if you have little water with a large heat (ie adding water to acid) then it will heat up faster than a heap of water with a little heat... Similar to a pot on the stove.
So adding a little acid to a lot of water makes it much harder for the water to boil. whereas having a lot of the reactive substance and a little water suggests spitting is much more likely to occur.
It is VERY interesting that you've had it spit when adding acid to water. Was the water hot? Soapy?

KP- go and buy a bottle of acid and try it

The water instantly dillutes the acid when water is pour on to the acid.

The action of acid being placed into water takes a little time to dillute.
All you chemists out there...
Geez I am soooo glad I left sckool at 14... I would hate to be tainted with
the educated broom.

As I said... not doubting your first hand exp... however last month I added some 34% HCl solution to my system. It did not spit at all, however I did not try adding water to the acid.

This is the strongest solution of HCl I have ever seen or used, and it was uncomfortable being within 400mm of an open (undiluted) sample.

But hey... to each his own, just do me a favour and make sure you wear safety glasses

I always add the acid to the water. Otherwise you don't know the strength of the acid in the container. Plus if there is something in the water that can react it is better to have a smaller amount of acid reacting with it. Clean water and a separate container then its up to the person.

yep ya right.....knowing and doing does matter lol...thats why you add acid to water and yes you do care Iv lmao

The fish are OK......but the plants are getting hammered from the heat ...Nitrite levels are OK

I have been adding hydrochloric acid to the system and the pH has been going up...reading is at 8.0 now......I thought it should be dropping to a more acidic level, not the other way around....where am I going wrong ???

Never seriously used hydroton before but I thought it was ph neural. Have you any limestone or shellgrit in the system?
Something is buffering it. Whats the ph of the tap water up there and where does it come from? And try taking the ph readings at different times of the day.

I have a clay paving tile under the main FT pump....but have been adding the Hydrochloric acid to try and lower the pH....and over night it seems to have jumped up from 7.2 to 8.0 Not sure of the pH of the tap water..

If its fired clay shouln't have an effect. You got much algae in the ft?

Not really....the FT is in the shed, but the sump is out side, its full of it and black ugly looking stuff....

Well you ain't going to get a stable ph reading until thats gone
The floaty stuff or just on the sides?
