Most of WA Forum Members will know that GM Canola can now be grown in WA. As Canola is a Brassica it will contanimate other Brassica crops including kale, rocket, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Insect activity means that we will not be able to prevent our backyard produce from being affected, nor will be able to tell when supermarket vegetables are contaminated.

An event is being planned to engage media publicity.

If you are interested in acting to stop GM canola from being planted in WA please contact Caralyn agardenpath@bedfordale.com

Nice one Adrian!

The Conservation Council of WA has been running a 'say no to GMO' campaign for a while now.

Members can check out the Council's website for more information:

Thank you for asking!

Over 50 people attended the “Network of Consumers for GM Free Food – rainbow picnic” event at a property in Bedfordale on Saturday 10th January.

The “rainbow picnic” theme was created to highlight that the “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” is Genetically Modified-(GM)-free produce currently being grown in Western Australia and exported to other states as well as to lucrative overseas markets.

Guest speaker, nutritional toxicologist Peter Dingle called for the protection of WA’s current status as GM free crop producer and to call on consumers to continually ask for GM free produce from supermarkets and food companies.

Associate Professor Peter Dingle said, “We are green and clean in WA. That’s what the rest of the country wants. That’s what the rest of the world wants”.

“If other countries are going to go down the GM path, then why should we not continue to supply to markets who are calling for GM-free produce?” he added.

“Countries such as Japan and China are demanding GM-free produce and this state, being geographically isolated is in the best position to remain GM free,” Dr Dingle concluded.

Guest speaker Helen Frost, National Nutrition Educator and Health Consultant also spoke of health concerns people have about unlabelled GM in their food.

“Consumers should remain health conscious and be aware of what they are eating and feeding their families”, Ms Frost said.

“We have no idea how safe GM food is and it needs to be further tested”, Ms Frost concluded.

Spokesperson for the “Perth Metro branch of the Consumers for GM free food Ms Janet Grogan said “People have been repeatedly calling on the government to re-assess their position on GM crops and demanding a continued ban on GM crops”.

“In addition, consumers have been asking for stricter labelling of GM ingredients in our imported food.

“It is clear from the small but vocal group who are here today that GM is not welcome in this state and that the government’s go-ahead for commercial sized GM canola trials has not considered the most important stakeholder i.e. the consumers”, Ms Grogan concluded.

For further information, please contact Janet Grogan email jan60gro@yahoo.com or 0420 820 713. Great GM information can be found on www.truefood.org.au.
